According to an ESPN source, Al Hilal has switched their focus to João Cancelo, a full-back for Manchester City, after learning that Kyle Walker would not be permitted to leave the team this summer. With a three-year contract worth about £15 million a season, the Saudi Pro League team hopes to entice Cancelo.
After being on loan for the last 18 months, the Portugal international is now available. Cancelo wasn’t included in the starting lineup for either the Community Shield match against Manchester United or the Premier League opener against Chelsea, despite City manager Pep Guardiola’s suggestion that he could be added back into the team after returning to training in Manchester this summer.
Guardiola ecstatic as Man City close in on £32.3m transfer
Manchester City received a large £32.3 million bid and started negotiations to sell a player Pep Guardiola would prefer not to keep, so he won’t have to deal with this for very long. Savinho, who joined from sister club Girona, was Manchester City’s lone significant acquisition during the summer transfer window, which saw the team remain oddly quiet.
Despite Cancelo’s lack of position in Guardiola’s plans, the adaptable full-back is still a top performer. Not only is Kyle Walker no longer a lock pick, but he is the only traditional full-back that Guardiola includes in his team lineups. Upon learning that Walker will not be permitted to depart City before the deadline, Al Hilal has increased their interest in Cancelo. Walker, Cancelo, and Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen made up the first three-man shortlist that the SPL team created.
