England manager Thomas Tuchel has shed light on his decision to omit Phil Foden from the latest national squad, attributing it to a combination of physical setbacks and a dip in form.

England Manager Tuchel Addresses Foden’s Exclusion: ‘He Needs a Break’

Foden, who was instrumental in Manchester City’s historic fourth consecutive Premier League title during the 2023/24 season, has faced challenges this year.

Persistent ankle issues and personal matters have impacted his performance, leading to a reduced role at his club.

The midfielder himself acknowledged the need for a mental and physical break, requesting time off to recuperate.

Tuchel, speaking to talkSPORT, expressed his admiration for Foden’s talent and character but emphasized the importance of the player’s well-being.

“Phil had a difficult time since the last camp,” Tuchel noted.

“He struggled to show his usual freedom and excitement on the pitch, both at the club and during our training sessions.”

The England manager also hinted at emotional factors affecting Foden, referencing the Manchester derby incident where the player was subjected to offensive chants.

“Things became more complicated after the Manchester derby, both on a personal and physical level,” Tuchel added.

While Foden’s absence from the national team is seen as a step towards his recovery, his participation in Manchester City’s upcoming FIFA Club World Cup remains uncertain.

City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed support for Foden, emphasizing the club’s focus on his health and readiness for future competitions.

As Foden takes this time to heal and regain his form, both club and country await his return, hopeful that the break will rejuvenate one of England’s brightest talents.
