Enzo Maresca has issued a stern warning to Premier League champions Arsenal, declaring that Manchester City’s record-breaking summer spending spree has given his squad the depth needed to reclaim the title.
“We Can Match Them Now”: Maresca Sends Chilling Message to Arsenal After Record Spending
The Italian manager watched his side secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Coventry City on Saturday, with Erling Haaland’s header proving decisive.
But it was City’s remarkable transfer activity that dominated Maresca’s post-match thoughts.
The club has shattered Premier League records by committing £458 million to new signings.
The spending reached its peak on deadline day with a £125 million move for Enzo Fernandez, following earlier acquisitions including £86 million Ayyoub Bouaddi, £65 million Iliman Ndiaye, and £116 million Elliot Anderson.
This overhaul follows the departure of legendary figures like Pep Guardiola, alongside midfield pillars Rodri and Bernardo Silva. While those exits generated over £300 million, the club has reinvested every penny to avoid any decline.
Maresca believes City now possess the resources to challenge Mikel Arteta’s side directly.
Last season, Arsenal finished seven points clear, but the summer transformation has radically altered the landscape.
“If you see since the Community Shield, Arsenal have made five changes in every game,” Maresca observed.
“Two World Cup winners, two England players—that is the quality we must match.”
The impact of City’s investment was immediately evident when record signing Fernandez started against Coventry after just two training sessions, following Nico O’Reilly’s late injury withdrawal.
Despite limited preparation, the Argentine midfielder displayed flashes of his immense potential.
Maresca also praised his substitutes’ role in managing Coventry’s late pressure, highlighting Bouaddi’s introduction to solidify midfield.
“If you want to be there, you need options. Arsenal have options. We have options,” he stated. “I’m very happy with what we have.”
City currently lead the Premier League with three victories from three matches, though Arsenal can join them on nine points with a win against Chelsea on Sunday.
The early signs suggest another two-horse race, with squad depth likely proving decisive in May.
