Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has delivered a diplomatic response to Enzo Fernandez’s controversial remarks following the midfielder’s British record transfer from Chelsea.

Maresca Plays Down Fernandez’s ‘Big Club’ Comment After Record Chelsea Departure

The Argentina international completed his blockbuster £125 million move to the Etihad Stadium on deadline day, reuniting with Maresca who previously coached him during their time together at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez raised eyebrows when he declared: “I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City,” in his first interview since completing the move.

The comment sparked immediate speculation that the midfielder was taking a swipe at his former employers.

However, Maresca, who also departed Chelsea under somewhat strained circumstances, refused to fuel any narrative of disrespect towards his previous club.

“Enzo Fernandez was already in a big club like Chelsea,” the Italian tactician responded firmly when questioned about the remark. “And he’s happy to be with us now.”

When pressed further on whether City represent a step up in stature, Maresca remained steadfast in his neutral stance, adding:

“Again, same answer. I think Chelsea is a big club and City is a big club.”

The £125 million fee makes Fernandez the most expensive signing in Manchester City’s history, underlining the club’s determination to secure the World Cup winner’s services.

His arrival adds significant firepower to Maresca’s midfield options as City pursue domestic and European glory.

Fernandez’s reunion with Maresca has been one of the talking points of the transfer window, with the pair having developed a strong working relationship during their Chelsea days.

The Argentine’s decision to leave West London for the Premier League champions has divided opinion among supporters.

Despite the weight of his price tag and the controversy surrounding his departure comments, Maresca appears keen to draw a line under the matter and focus on integrating his new signing into the City setup.

Whether Fernandez’s comments were intended as a slight remains open to interpretation, but Maresca has made it clear he sees no need to compare the two institutions.
