Erling Haaland is once again a target for Real Madrid as the team looks to add a forward from Manchester City

The Spanish powerhouses have started laying the groundwork for a possible world-record transfer in the summer of 2024, when an alleged clause in Haaland’s contract is said to enable him to leave the Premier League team for a sum between €220m and €240m.

Karim Benzema will receive a one-year contract extension from Real Madrid for the upcoming campaign, and the Spanish club plans to replace the Frenchman in 2024 with a hero. Haaland is at the top of the list for Los Blancos after an exceptional first season in English football in which the Norwegian has scored 42 goals in all categories.

After speaking with the forward ahead of his move to Manchester, AS reports that Real Madrid has “exact knowledge” of Haaland’s contract status. The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner’s outstanding play stopped the 22-year-old from being signed by the European champions, despite their interest in a deal.

But Real will make a drive for Haaland next summer because they need a long-term replacement for Benzema. The clause in his contract will be in effect for 2025 and 2026 should he elect not to leave Manchester City.

It is unclear how Real’s interest in Haaland will affect the team’s long-term plans for Kylian Mbappe. The PSG player, who came very close to joining Real last summer before accepting a new contract in Paris, and Haaland are both potential targets for the Spaniards. Real think the expected departures of Benzema, Eden Hazard, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the coming transfer windows could provide room to fund the wages of both forwards.
