Manchester City are eyeing a potential squad overhaul in the January transfer window, with reports linking them to several high-profile players.

Fabrizio Romano provides key update on Manchester City’s pursuit of Atalanta star Ederson

Among the names is Atalanta’s midfield dynamo Ederson, whose performances in Serie A have attracted widespread attention.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has cast doubt on the likelihood of the Brazilian making the switch to the Etihad this winter.

In his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter, Romano described City’s pursuit of Ederson as “more than complicated,” citing Atalanta’s firm stance on their star midfielder’s value.

While reports suggested a possible deal worth £41.5 million, Romano clarified that such a figure wouldn’t even come close to meeting the Italian club’s demands.

“Atalanta sources guarantee €50m reported fee is not even gonna be enough,” Romano stated.

“He’s on the radar of four or five clubs, but I don’t think it’s gonna be easy in January… at all.”

The Citizens are navigating uncharted territory under Pep Guardiola, enduring their worst season since his arrival.

With just two wins in their last 14 matches across all competitions before facing West Ham, the need for reinforcements has become glaring.

Guardiola himself hinted at plans to refresh the squad during the winter window, adding fuel to the transfer speculation.

Ederson, renowned for his defensive solidity and progressive play, has been a linchpin for Atalanta this season.

Yet, securing his signature mid-season presents numerous challenges, not least because of his importance to the Serie A side.

City’s midfield issues have been magnified by injuries to Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne, coupled with inconsistent form from players like Phil Foden and Matheus Nunes.

The return of Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer from Barcelona has yet to deliver the expected impact, further emphasizing the need for fresh legs in midfield.

With Atalanta unlikely to budge on their valuation, City face a tough decision: either break the bank for Ederson or shift their focus elsewhere.

As the January window approaches, the club’s next moves will be closely watched by fans and rivals alike.
