Foden should start every game - Richards

Micah Richards has sent a message to Pep Guardiola regarding the future of Phil Foden.

“Phil Foden, I’ve been banging on about him. He should be starting every single week now,” Richards told Sky Sports.

“I don’t know why he doesn’t play, every time I watch him play, he affects the game.

“Phil Foden affects the game. (Ilkay) Gundogan, who doesn’t always get all the credit, because he’s got other outstanding players on the pitch, but he’s been having an outstanding season as well.

“(Joao) Cancelo has been doing well since Kyle Walker’s been out as well.”

Warming to his theme, Richards had more to say on Foden, in particular.

“He (Guardiola) has said many times there’s one player he wouldn’t sell – Phil Foden,” Richards added.

“I just want to see him play every single week.

“He’s played like this before and then he’s been left out the team.

“His touch, his technique, his awareness – and every time he plays, I feel he does affect the game.

“Sometimes, last season and again this season, when he (Guardiola) is going to make a substitution, you just know his number’s going to be up.

“And I just feel if he doesn’t score or assist in a game, he’s going to be taken off.

“I think he gives so much more to a team than just goals and assists. His energy, his work rate, his desire, the way he closes down. He can link (play) – he’s got absolutely everything, Phil Foden.

“I’ve been saying this for years, I don’t want to compare him to David Silva… I just think he’s an incredible talent and I want him to play every single game.

“He deserves to play now.”
