A former Premier League director has revealed the “likely” punishment Manchester City faces if an independent commission finds the club guilty of any of their 115 alleged financial breaches.
‘It Will End in Relegation’: New Prediction on Man City’s 115 Charges Outcome
Christian Purslow, the former managing director of Liverpool, warns that City could be looking at a massive points deduction that would ultimately result in relegation from the top flight.
The Premier League charged the reigning champions back in February 2023 following a four-year investigation.
City face accusations regarding financial transparency, cooperation with investigators, and profitability and sustainability regulations stretching back to the 2009/10 season. The club vehemently denies all charges.
A private 10-week hearing concluded in December 2024, but football fans are still waiting for a verdict.
While many expect a lengthy appeals process to follow any initial ruling, Purslow believes the outcome for City could be severe.
Speaking on ‘The Football Boardroom, Purslow explained that the independent three-person panel will look to “precedent” when deciding on sanctions. He insists the Premier League must avoid any temptation to settle the matter privately.
“The sporting sanction is likely to be major points deductions, which ultimately could translate into relegation,” Purslow stated.
He added that allowing the independent legal process to conclude is the only way to maintain integrity, even if the wait is frustrating.
While modern top-flight cases are rare, legal precedent does exist. The case of Swindon Town in 1990, who were demoted two divisions for illegal payments, could serve as a benchmark.
Purslow’s warning comes as the football world continues to speculate on the timing of the verdict.
City manager Pep Guardiola predicted a result would arrive early last year, but delays have pushed expectations back significantly.
Sources close to the case suggest it could be another year before all appeals conclude, leaving City’s status in the balance for the foreseeable future.
