After Manchester City’s dramatic 3–2 win over Leeds United on Saturday, there was a brief but heated exchange between manager Pep Guardiola and striker Erling Haaland — a moment that sparked widespread attention.
But according to Guardiola, the conversation was far from a confrontation: it was a mix of encouragement, realism and concern for his star forward.

City had surged to a 2–0 lead thanks to early goals from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol.
But Leeds stormed back after the interval with strikes from Dominic Calvert‑Lewin and Lukas Nmecha — setting up a tense finish.
In added time, Foden rose to the occasion yet again, delivering a stoppage-time winner to snatch victory for City.
For Haaland, though, the afternoon ended in frustration. He played the full 90 minutes — but failed to find the net, postponing his bid to reach 100 Premier League goals.
Clearly frustrated, he confronted Guardiola right after the final whistle. The fiery moment, however, ended with two embraces from the manager; both men left with smiles.
In a later interview, Guardiola revealed he had one message for Haaland — and it was simple.
“He’ll do it next game,” he told reporters. “We just talked about rest. He has a huge body.
Minutes, minutes… In that moment you’re fresh. Rest is not just the legs — it’s the head.
It’s not like Phil or Jeremy [Doku], they can rest. Erling is a big man. We need him so much.”
Guardiola stressed that his words were about protecting Haaland’s physical and mental energy — not criticism.
He believes that when fresh, the Norwegian will soon reach the milestone.
Meanwhile, Haaland himself responded on social media: “Not easy today but we never give up!”
With City now back on track in the title race, all eyes will be on Haaland — can he hit 100 Premier League goals in their next fixture?
