Due to the close ties between Manchester City and Barcelona, Barcelona and Manchester City enjoy a great overall relationship

Although one of Pep Guardiola’s greatest players has been persistently linked with a move to Barcelona for much of the past year, the two have clumsily sidestepped the subject.

If there can be no smoke without fire, then someone on one side of the transaction was persistently spreading rumours that Silva wanted to move to Camp Nou and that Xavi Hernandez was his biggest fan.

In an interview with Que t’hi Jugues on Thursday, Barcelona President Joan Laporta addressed the rumours directly. “We won’t spend $80,000,000 on Bernardo Silva. That much is true. Haaland? We’ll see how he handles it at City; right now, Lewandowski is performing admirably.

Sport reported on his remarks, which most likely put an end to Barcelona supporters’ aspirations of a move. Laporta does not, however, specifically exclude a relocation.

Given the calibre of the player, Manchester City would be perfectly within their rights to demand a sum in that range. However, Guardiola and City have always prided themselves on letting dissatisfied players leave, so it’s possible that Laporta floated that suggestion in an effort to get the price down. Of course, none of this matters if Silva doesn’t try to leave.
