According to reports, Manchester City made a move that would help Newcastle United in their bid for James Trafford. This past week, Manchester City entered the hunt to capture their former player, dashing Newcastle’s chances of acquiring Trafford from Burnley.

When it comes to negotiating a deal with Burnley, City has a significant advantage over Newcastle because they have a buy-back option and a sizable sell-on clause. It is believed that Trafford has accepted the possibility of joining Manchester City and agreed to personal terms with Newcastle; the only question now is which team can make a deal for the goalie.

However, reports from Portugal indicate that Manchester City is not ruling out a goalkeeper acquisition. Ever since he advanced through the Academy ranks with impressive performances during his time in the EDS and England youth levels, Manchester City’s decision-makers have considered Trafford, who is currently 22 years old, a natural long-term possibility.

Man City consider James Trafford move amid Ederson uncertainty

Ederson has one year left on his contract with the team, but City has not received a formal offer. Ederson insisted on staying at City for the current season during the FIFA Club World Cup. Club executives are still debating the possibility of re-signing Trafford, though, despite this.

In 2023, City acquired the England goalkeeper from Burnley with a buy-back clause. Newcastle has also been mentioned as a potential suitor for the 22-year-old.

Regarding his plans for the upcoming campaign, Stefan Ortega, Ederson’s understudy, has been less specific. With one year remaining on his contract, the German has been linked to a move to the Bundesliga.

Before the Club World Cup, City signed Marcus Bettinelli, their third-choice goalkeeper, from Chelsea on a one-year contract. According to his remarks, James Trafford is obviously open to coming back, but probably only if there is a route to senior minutes.
