Pep Guardiola is reportedly “restless in his own mind” following his recent, unexpected outburst regarding Manchester City’s transfer spending.
Wyness: Guardiola’s Net Spend Outburst Proves He Is Not at Peace at Man City
The claim comes from former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, who suggests the manager’s comments signal inner turmoil at the Etihad.
Guardiola raised eyebrows during a press conference last week when he appeared to criticize the club’s financial backing.
He pointed out that over the last five years, Manchester City rank seventh in the Premier League for net spend.
“I am a little bit sad and upset,” Guardiola told reporters.
“In net spend the last five years, we are seventh. I want to be first. I don’t understand why the club don’t spend more money. I am a little bit grumpy with them.”
The timing of the remarks raised questions, especially after City signed Antoine Semenyo for £64 million and Marc Guehi for £20 million in the recent January window.
Speaking on the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness described the comments as out of character.
“It was a bit of a ramble and it did come out of the blue to a great extent,” Wyness said.
“The timing didn’t seem to make much sense.”
While Guardiola used net-spend figures to make his point, Wyness believes the manager was likely speaking with “tongue in cheek.”
He emphasized that the club has always supported Guardiola. “City have backed him with whatever he’s wanted,” Wyness added.
“They have been well run. Ferran Soriano has done a superb job.”
However, Wyness suggested there might be deeper reasons behind the public frustration.
“For Pep, it’s just another sign of somebody who seems a bit restless in his own mind right now,” he said.
“He just doesn’t seem entirely at peace with himself. I’m no psychoanalyst, but it just seems strange timing for the whole thing to come out.”
Despite the comments, Guardiola remains one of the most successful managers in the club’s history. Since arriving in 2016, he has won 18 trophies, and he will look to add more silverware before the season ends.
