The stakes in Manchester City’s protracted dispute with the Premier League over what are now known as the “115 charges” are extremely high.

Financial experts who have followed the story claim that if the most serious accusations are confirmed, the team might lose a startling 60 points, which would not only ruin their present season but also put them in danger of relegation.

City argues that its behavior has met with league rules and has continuously denied any misconduct. However, since accusations were formally filed in February 2023—nearly three years ago—the case, which centers on alleged violations of financial fair play and other Premier League regulations, has lingered on.

Nine seasons’ worth of allegations, which the Premier League says include inaccurate financial reporting and noncompliance with investigations, are at the center of the conflict. Over a year after the conclusion of the independent hearing in late 2024, a ruling has yet to be rendered.

60-point deduction deemed logical as board has to go with guilty verdict

Kieran Maguire, a football financial expert, has been a prominent voice on the possible seriousness of the penalty. In an interview with The Overlap, Maguire clarified why the only practical sports punishment permitted by Premier League regulations is a points penalty rather than relegation.

The extent to which this case may deviate from precedent is highlighted by Maguire’s view. Although lesser teams have previously been subject to mild penalties, like Everton’s six-point reduction for a three-year violation, the seriousness of City’s alleged infractions points to a punishment that might be 10 times higher.

Maguire stated, “You have to add a zero to what we’ve seen,” firmly situating a deduction of 40 to 60 points within the bounds of logic based on past examples. According to Premier League rules, a club cannot be unilaterally demoted to the English Football League (EFL), hence City cannot be placed in the third or fourth tier as some pundits have conjectured.

Any sports punishment would instead have to take the shape of top flight points lost, which might have equally drastic consequences. This kind of deduction would not only hurt Manchester City’s chances of winning the championship, but it may also force them to fight for relegation.
