The signing of a regular England international in 2026 would put Man City squarely in the running for a major coup. Despite spending almost £180 million during the summer transfer window, Pep Guardiola has been eager to strengthen his defensive options as part of a significant squad revamp.
For most of the summer transfer window, Guéhi was a top target for Premier League winners Liverpool. However, Palace withdrew from the agreement at the last minute after failing to find their preferred replacement, even though they had accepted a £35 million proposal in the last days of the transfer window.
Since Guehi’s deadline-day deal to Liverpool fell through, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has become a priority target for Man City, as he is anticipated to see out his contract. As I disclosed on the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, several teams are on high alert due to Guehi’s availability on a free transfer.
According to sources, City is the most recent of many top teams to show interest in the 25-year-old and think they can present a strong case to acquire him.
Man City go all in for Marc Guehi in January
According to The Guardian, a private plane was also scheduled to transport him to Merseyside on Monday night. Guehi’s fury is reportedly causing him to ponder resigning as captain. In contrast to Alexander Isak and others who essentially went on strike to push through deals to rival teams this summer, he feels he made the right decision throughout the discussions.
In order to save the club money and avoid losing him needlessly, Guehi may depart in January since he will not sign a new deal with Palace. Guehi was a member of the Palace squad that won the FA Cup in May and has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s top center backs.
After starting in Chelsea’s youth system at the age of seven, Guehi advanced to the main team. However, he only participated in two EFL Cup matches before being sold to Crystal Palace in 2021 after being loaned to Swansea in 2020. On his route to the final at Euro 2024, he made an impression and earned 23 caps for England.
