Manchester City have reportedly joined rivals Manchester United in the battle to sign Brighton’s highly rated midfielder Carlos Baleba.

The 21-year-old Cameroonian has emerged as a top target for both clubs, but Brighton have set a hefty £104 million price tag for his services.
According to reports, United recently made contact with Brighton through intermediaries to discuss a potential deal for Baleba, who they see as a key reinforcement for their midfield.
However, the Red Devils currently lack the funds to meet Brighton’s valuation, with the club valuing the player closer to £70 million.
To finance the move, United may need to offload players like Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, or Jadon Sancho before the transfer window closes.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have now entered the race, with manager Pep Guardiola said to be a long-time admirer of Baleba’s talent.
The Premier League champions could pose a serious threat to United’s hopes, given their financial strength and appeal as a title-winning side.
Brighton, however, are reluctant to sell Baleba this summer and prefer to keep him for at least another season. The midfielder, who joined from Lille in 2023 for £26 million, has a contract until 2028, with an option for an additional year.
He was named Brighton’s Young Player of the Season last term and has attracted attention with his commanding performances.
Despite the growing interest, Baleba is reportedly content to stay at Brighton for now, with a move more likely in 2025. Yet, if either Manchester club meets Brighton’s demands, the situation could change quickly.
With both City and United pushing for his signature, the battle for Baleba could become one of the most intriguing transfer sagas of the summer.
