New contract deals have been negotiated in principle between Manchester City and midfielder Nico O’Reilly and defender Ruben Dias.
Academy product O’Reilly’s contract is set to end in 2028, while Portugal international Dias’ current one expires in 2027. The new contracts’ duration has not been disclosed by sources.
The 28-year-old Dias cost £65 million to join City from Benfica in 2020. Since then, he has made 222 appearances for the team, winning four Premier League championships, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. Eleven months after joining City, the center-back actually secured a contract extension after making an impression in his debut campaign.
Dias’s performance has been erratic, particularly in the past 12 months, and some fans think manager Pep Guardiola ought to consider signing January recruit Abdukodir Khusanov to take his place.
Dias & O’Reilly close to signing new Man City deals
The club still thinks the Portuguese international has a lot to contribute, though, as evidenced by his new deal. O’Reilly, 20, had his first debut in the first team due to City’s injury issue last season, playing mostly left-back, a position he was unfamiliar with.
Chelsea conducted an inquiry at the start of this year, and Bayer Leverkusen made approaches for the midfield player earlier in the summer.
Although there were rumors that O’Reilly was considering departing to play regularly for the first team, the new deal shows that Guardiola has made some promises regarding playing time.
The Citizens are reportedly eager to sign Rodri to a two-year contract extension. The club hopes to retain the Ballon d’Or winner until at least 2029, even though his contract is scheduled to end in 2027 (the same year as Dias).
If the 29-year-old accepts the deal, he is expected to become the second-highest-paid player after Erling Haaland. We’ll have to wait and see whether he decides to prolong his stay because there are rumors that Real Madrid wants to bring him back to Spain.
