Manchester City are prepared to approve a January departure for goalkeeper James Trafford, just months after he returned to the club.
Pep Guardiola Clears Path for James Trafford to Leave Man City
According to Football Insider, the club will not block a move for the 23-year-old, whether on a permanent deal or a loan.
Trafford re-joined City from Burnley in the summer, but his prospects have changed dramatically since the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italian international has quickly established himself as the clear first-choice, confining Trafford to appearances in cup competitions and pushing him down the pecking order.
This shift has led to a growing belief that a January exit now benefits all parties.
Mick Brown, a former chief scout with extensive recruitment experience at Manchester United, confirmed the developing situation.
“It feels almost inevitable that he will look to leave Man City and I don’t think they’ll stand in his way,” Brown stated.
He noted that while Trafford’s initial return was a logical move based on his strong performances for Burnley, the opportunity to sign a player of Donnarumma’s caliber was one City could not refuse.
Brown emphasized there is no ill will, with both the club and player understanding the circumstances.
Manager Pep Guardiola had previously been reluctant to sanction a mid-season exit, seeing a long-term future for Trafford at the Etihad.
However, the current reality of his limited playing time has altered that stance. The club now recognizes that allowing Trafford to seek a move where he can be a first-choice goalkeeper is the most sensible path forward.
Thanks to his impressive form during his time at Burnley, Trafford is not short of admirers.
Several clubs are expected to explore a deal for the Englishman when the transfer window reopens, making a January move increasingly likely.
