Manchester City’s Portugal defender Ruben Dias will be out for “four to six weeks” because of a hamstring injury
Manchester City have been hit with a major blow as they attempt to hold off Liverpool’s challenge at the top of the Premier League.
Ruben Dias, one of the most influential figures in last season’s League-winning campaign, has suffered a hamstring problem and will likely be ruled out of action for the next six weeks. Dias joined City from Benfica in September 2020 for a fee of about £65 million.
Dias has missed only two of City’s 27 Premier League games as they have climbed to the top of the standings.
Dias sustained the injury in the first half of Tuesday’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Peterborough, and with Nathan Ake also forced off in that match with a less serious problem, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are City’s only senior central defenders available for Sunday’s Manchester derby.
Dias is set to miss at least five games, including three Premier League games, beginning with the Manchester derby against Manchester United at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
City leads Liverpool by six points, despite having played one more game. If Liverpool beats West Ham at Anfield on Saturday, they will close the deficit to three points before the Manchester derby.
