Manchester City have announced the signing of Julian Alvarez on a five-and-a-half-year deal from River Plate

The 22-year-old attacker was extensively connected with a number of teams during the January transfer window, but Alvarez will play the most of his football at the Etihad Stadium come the start of next season or the start of 2023.

The teenager will stay at his present club until before travelling to England, where he will hopefully be healthy and firing up for the 2022/23 season.

“Julian is a guy we’ve been watching for a while,” City sports director Txiki Begiristain said.

“He can play a variety of attacking roles, and we feel he’s one of the finest young attacking players in South America.”

The Argentine international is a player who typically operates across the attacking line, having previously played on the flank or as a centre striker.

In October 2018, he made his senior debut with Los Millionarios.

With the departure of Ferran Torres earlier in the transfer window, Alvarez is anticipated to assume the Spaniard’s place in the team when he arrives, boosting Pep Guardiola’s forward line.

Alvarez has been compared to Sergio Aguero, and City fans will be hoping that their new addition can offer the team with memorable moments like his Argentine counterpart.
