Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has personally initiated a move to sign left-back Alejandro Balde from Barcelona this January, according to reports.

Man City target January move for Barcelona left-back Balde

The potential transfer sees Guardiola, a legendary figure at Camp Nou from his playing and managerial days, turning his attention to his former club in a bid to strengthen his squad for a Premier League title push.

This move comes despite City’s summer signing of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since early September.

This absence has left the team relying on the less experienced Nico O’Reilly for the position, prompting Guardiola to seek a proven alternative. The club sees the 22-year-old Balde as an ideal solution.

Recognized as one of the world’s top left-backs, his profile as an attacking, overlapping defender would provide natural width, allowing City’s creative wingers to operate more effectively in central areas.

Reports from Catalonia indicate that Guardiola has already contacted Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, to discuss a deal. However, the operation is described as complex.

Balde is a key part of manager Hansi Flick’s system and is under contract with Barcelona until 2028.

Furthermore, the Spanish international has also faced injury issues this season, missing several weeks with a hamstring problem.

While Barcelona may consider a sale for the right price, a mid-season transfer appears difficult. With a valuation around €60 million, a deal is more likely to be pursued next summer if it progresses at all.

For now, Manchester City continues its campaign, with focus immediately turning to their upcoming Champions League fixture against Villarreal.
