Manchester City’s search for Kevin de Bruyne’s Successor Intensifies
Manchester City have identified four potential replacements for Kevin de Bruyne, who looks set to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad. The Belgian midfielder, having agreed on personal terms, awaits the final negotiation between the clubs to seal the move.
De Bruyne’s imminent departure has prompted City manager Pep Guardiola to act swiftly. With only a year left on his contract, selling the 33-year-old now rather than losing him on a free transfer next summer seems prudent.
Guardiola’s first target is Benfica’s Joao Neves. The 19-year-old, touted as one of Europe’s most promising midfielders, has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Manchester United. The battle for his signature could intensify, given his £105 million release clause.
Next on the list is Dutch sensation Xavi Simons. The 21-year-old impressed during his loan spell at RB Leipzig, scoring 10 goals and providing 15 assists.
Bayern Munich currently lead the race for Simons, but City remain vigilant, hoping to capitalize on any slip-ups in negotiations.
Another name in the mix is Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz, pivotal in Leverkusen’s double-winning campaign, netted 18 goals and assisted 20 times last season. However, prying him away from Leverkusen might prove challenging, as the German club is keen to keep their star for at least another year.
Lastly, Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala has caught City’s eye. The 21-year-old has been in sensational form at Euro 2024, scoring three goals.
With his contract negotiations at a standstill, City have made behind-the-scenes movements to secure his services. Musiala remains Guardiola’s top choice, but acquiring him will require overcoming significant hurdles.
As de Bruyne prepares for his Saudi adventure, City’s pursuit of these young talents underscores their ambition to remain at the pinnacle of European football.
