Marvelous youngster Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen has rekindled Manchester City’s interest in him

Wirtz, who is considered as one of European football’s most promising young players, has returned to the German national team after overcoming a serious knee ligament injury that kept him out for nine months and prevented him from competing at the 2022 World Cup.

The 19-year-old has been on City’s radar for some time, and insiders have told 90min that the team is once more seriously interested in his development. Arsenal, Tottenham, and Newcastle are also rumored to have observed the player, and Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also in the running. City is not the only team to admire the player.

The strongest connections, however, have involved Barcelona, and after joining up with Germany ahead of the upcoming international break, Wirtz spoke of the Catalan powers’ alleged interest.

Despite the rumors, German sources have told 90min that Leverkusen does not expect Wirtz, who is under contract until 2027, to leave this summer. However, their position might change if they are unable to advance in the Bundesliga standings and fail to receive a sizable offer.

Making sure that Wirtz is a part of Hansi Flick’s squad for the Euro 2024 tournament, which will be held in Germany next summer, is one of the main arguments cited by Leverkusen as the reason Wirtz should decide to remain.
