The £20 million transfer of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi to Manchester City is moving forward; the England international is scheduled to undergo a medical on Sunday. Guehi, 25, and the Blues have already reached a personal agreement. Following injuries to defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, City began negotiations with Guehi this month.
The captain of Palace, who has been linked to some of the best teams in Europe, had a contract expiring this summer and was on the verge of joining Liverpool last summer. When the South London team defeated City in the FA Cup final at Wembley, Guehi guided them to their first significant prize.
Since signing from Swansea in 2020, the Chelsea academy product has made 188 appearances for Palace; 33 of those came this season as his team started their inaugural Europa Conference League season. Oliver Glasner, the manager of Palace, reportedly said on Friday that he would be leaving the team at the conclusion of the season as a result of the transfer.
Marc Guéhi set for Man City medical ahead of £20m move
A five-and-a-half-year deal at the Etihad Stadium has been agreed upon by Guéhi, who was scheduled to become a free agent in the summer. Pep Guardiola stated, “I don’t know yet officially for my club,” following City’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United on Saturday. Hugo [Viana, director of football] and Ferran [Soriano, chief executive] didn’t tell me anything, but it seems like it’s near.
Following the £64 million acquisition of winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, Guéhi will be City’s second January acquisition. Following injuries to Josko Gvardiol, Rúben Dias, and John Stones, club officials intensified negotiations with Palace and the England defender.
Gvardiol may be out for the remainder of the season due to a fractured leg. Stones has only made one Premier League start since August, and Dias is anticipated to miss another month due to a hamstring issue. Guéhi and Semenyo will not be able to go to Bodø/Glimt on Tuesday for the Champions League match.
