Manchester City are interested in 28-year-old defender Diego Carlos

According to reports, the centre-back, who is now playing for Sevilla, is being pursued by Manchester City and Liverpool for a summer move.

Manchester City and Liverpool are now top and second in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, so their pursuit of a centre-back may be perplexing to some. Both managers, though, believe in squad rotation and want to have depth at every position on the field.

Virgil Van-Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez are Liverpool’s first-team centre backs. With the addition of Carlos, Liverpool may aim to offload someone like Gomez, who has battled for playing time this season.

Manchester City’s centre defence options include Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, and Nathan Ake. Carlos is unlikely to join the club until a centre-back is sold.

Because of his age, moving to a squad where he might not start every game makes little sense. He’s a seasoned pro who won’t want to join a club just to sit on the bench, even if it’s a European powerhouse.

Newcastle came close to signing Carlos in January and are set to attempt again in the summer, according to Marca. If Carlos wants to play regular football, a move to Newcastle, which is battling near the bottom of the standings, might be the best option.
