Kalvin Phillips has been on the sideline for two months.

The Englishman moved from Leeds United this summer and has been restricted to only three substitute appearances due to shoulder injury.

He is expected to start the game against Chelsea this midweek in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old recently spoke about his recovery from the shoulder injury.

Phillips told BBC Radio 5 Live: “The shoulder’s perfectly fine now. “I have gone through a seven-week process of recovering as fast as I possibly can for the World Cup. Everything is going great.

“I’ve obviously not done it for quite a long time now but I’ve kept my fitness up and I’d like to think I could play 90 minutes.”

He added: “I’m not too sure yet. I’m very hopeful that I can be involved. We will have to wait and see.

“[Following surgery] I spoke to Gareth and told him about my situation. I said I understood if he didn’t select me but he reassured me that ‘as long as you’re fit enough and you prove you’re progressing well, there’s always a chance you will be called up’.”

Pep Guardiola hints at long-term Man City future

Pep Guardiola hints at long-term Man City future

Guardiola has overseen nine major trophy successes, including four Premier League titles, since he took charge in 2016.

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has hinted about his future at Etihad. He claims his passion for City is being constantly refueled by players and fans.

Pep’s contract will expire at the end of season 2022/23. His remarks will offer encouragement to the club that he could soon extend his glittering spell as manager at the reigning champions.

The 51-year-old manager admired his side’s last-gasp victory over Fulham on Saturday – secured with an Erling Haaland penalty deep into injury time – as ‘the’ moment of his time at the Etihad Stadium so far.

That is some statement given that the Catalan has overseen nine major trophy successes, including four Premier League titles, since he took charge in 2016.

“This is not (just) me to them, or them to me,” he said. “This is a feedback. I give them enthusiasm but they give it to me.

“The way they play, I see the faces of our people. They give me the energy for the future, for Chelsea and Brentford.

“I cannot disappoint them, I have to be there with them.”

Guardiola was especially proud of Saturday’s dramatic success given that his side played most of the game with 10 men after the sending off of Joao Cancelo.

He said: “What I’m proud of most is that, after seven years, still we can perform like we’ve performed this season. We can play good, bad, win or lose, but when you lose it’s always what do we have to do to do better.

“You see the team not give up, the way they played after the sending off, some decisions. It was a perfect amount of grumpy energy that you need for 10 v 11. Otherwise, you can give up. That’s why we compete until the end.”

Playmaker Kevin De Bruyne felt Guardiola’s fervent response highlighted the mix of emotions felt after securing such a win in tense circumstances.

“It was the same as us – everything came out,” said the Belgian. “It is sometimes these games at the end of the season that you look at and they are really important, so it was nice for us.”

De Bruyne admits he has little inkling of what Guardiola’s future intentions are.

He said: “I think he is more and more relaxed as he’s been so long with us. I think for him it is also easier because if you go to a new team you have to teach again.

“Now after seven years it is repeating itself, so I feel there is less of an edge sometimes and maybe it is more calm for him.

“But to be honest I don’t know. I don’t think you’ll get too much out of him. Everything is fine. He’s got his contract until the end of the year and after that we’ll see.”

Pep Guardiola would want to extend his stay at the Etihad.

The City boss was delighted with his side’s 2-1 win over Fulham playing with 10 men for over an hour.

Erling Haaland’s goal in injury time sealed the game for the Premier League champions.

Guardiola who has been at City since 2016 has entered the final year of his contract could be ready to extend his stay at the Etihad after yesterday’s display.

He said: “Your emotions as a manager, after seven years here, you always have doubts whether the people will still follow you or are tired.

“We have thousands of meetings and so many travels.

“But then you see today and you think ‘wow, still they want to do it and they are alive.

“It makes me so, so proud. Everyone was exceptional. We didn’t win the Premier League today, of course.

“But these moments, when you see the faces in the crowd, that make your job feel so good.”

Erling Haaland will return against Fulham this weekend.

The Premier League’s top goalscorer this season will return to action against Fulham on Saturday.

The Norwegian striker has scored 22 goals in all competitions since his summer move at the Etihad.

He missed out in City’s 3-1 win over midweek as City have already sealed top spot in their group.

Haaland’s return from ankle injury could be a huge boost for Pep Guardiola as City tries to close the gap to league-leaders Arsenal in the standings.

“He’s much better, we’ll decide today,” Guardiola stated on Friday.

“A good step, he starts training today. We see this afternoon.

“We consider his opinion, the doctor’s opinion, [if he will play] 90 minutes or less minutes… we’ll see.”

Pep Guardiola wants Gundogan to pen a new contract at Etihad

Pep Guardiola wants Gundogan to pen a new contract at Etihad

Gundogan will enter into the final six months of his contract.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has faith in Ilkay Gundogan. He wants to see the central midfielder pen a new contract at the Etihad Stadium, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The 32-year-old is playing for the Premier League champions since 2016. He completed a £21million switch from Borussia Dortmund, but there are doubts over where his long-term future lies.

Gundogan will enter into the final six months of his contract, leaving Manchester City in a precarious position.

In an interview with German media outlet Kicker during the summer, via the Manchester Evening News, the 32-year-old admitted he was unsure as to whether he would be interested in a fresh challenge elsewhere but would not agree to fresh terms before being given assurances over his playing time.

According to Spanish sources, Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta is eager to lure the German star to La Liga for the first time in his career.

The report added Bayern Munich could also offer the new deal to the Manchester City skipper.

Sheth believes Gundogan wants to assess his options before entering negotiations over a new contract at Manchester City.

But, the Sky Sports reporter is in no doubt that Guardiola would like to keep the fan favourite at the Etihad Stadium.

Sheth told GIVEMESPORT: “His contract is up in the summer. He’s publicly said that now’s not the time to talk about a new contract. Maybe he wants to be in a position where he wants to weigh up all of his options.

“He’s 32 years old now, but Pep Guardiola loves him and people forget that Pep’s first signing was Ilkay Gundogan six years ago or so.

“This is his seventh season at the club now, so does he want to stay or does he want a new challenge?”

Manchester City should make negotiating fresh terms with the 32-year-old, who has scored 50 goals for the club.

Pep Guardiola hails Manchester City’s youngest Champions League goalscorer

Pep Guardiola hails Manchester City’s youngest Champions League goalscorer

Guardiola substituted Lewis five minutes from time and he scored a goal.

Pep Guardiola admired the teenage star Rico Lewis as something special. The 17-year-old became Manchester City’s youngest Champions League goalscorer on Wednesday.

The right-back marked his first senior start by netting City’s equaliser as they came from behind to beat the Spanish giants 3-1 in their final Champions League group game. Man City have already qualified for the round of 16.

It was a sweet moment for the Manchester-born youngster, who took full advantage of an opportunity to play in the continuing absence of injured Kyle Walker.

“We don’t give presents because he is a Man City fan or from the academy,” said City manager Guardiola. “You have to earn it.

“But we’ve seen him since day one of pre-season. This guy has something special.

“Defensively he is aggressive and with the ball he is so good. Of course he has a lot to improve but the academy here is working amazingly.”

Lewis was substituted five minutes from time and, as he was on the far side of the field at the time, earned a huge reception as he walked around the field back to the bench.

“He made a standing ovation all the way round,” said Guardiola. “He played really good.

“He is 17 years old but he is so clever, so intelligent. You say something, he understands everything. I’m happy for him.”

Alvarez is also doing great. The Argentian scored one and provided the passes for the other two goals.

Guardiola said: “There is no one player in the locker room who is not happy for him. He is a special guy. He was patient and found the space and got the rewards he deserved.”

There had been little riding on the game with City already through to the last 16 as Group G winners.

Guardiola added: “Of course we had qualified but we finished well. For the money and the prestige it is good for the club. It was a good night for us, especially the second half.”

Jorge Sampaoli believes Manchester City long deserved to win the Champions League

Man City hammered Sevilla 4-0 in their Champions League opener in September.

Veteran Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli admits Manchester City have long deserved to win the Champions League.

Sampaoli will measure his side up against Pep Guardiola’s side in their final Group G game of this year’s Champions League on Wednesday.

City reached into the final of the UEFA Champions League 2021 but lost to their Premier League rivals, Chelsea. They have already secured their place in the last 16 for the 10th successive season and are among the favourites to finally claim the top prize.

“In the project of Guardiola I think City have made great achievements,” said former Argentina boss Sampaoli in his pre-match press conference at the Etihad Stadium.

“I think he would made a huge difference to any team in the world, but the Champions League is a very individual, special tournament.

“They have not managed to win it yet, but, from the way they play, they may have deserved to have won it more than once.

“I think they are better than any team in England and some teams in the Champions League, but football is a funny game. The best teams don’t necessarily win trophies all the time.

“But I really value what City have achieved, not just in one year, but in the whole period of Guardiola managing here. He has shown consistency that no team in the world has been able to reproduce at any point.”

City hammered Sevilla 4-0 in their group opener in September, one of a string of poor results that culminated in the sacking of Julen Lopetegui as manager last month. The club appointed 62-year-old Argentinian Sampaoli for a second spell.

They have won just one of their five LaLiga games since and are sitting at the 18th spot. They won against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League last time out but are already confirmed in third place in the group and play Europa League.

“It is basically a way of consolidating the plans we have been putting in place,” said Sampaoli.

“It is almost impossible to get rid of bad habits in a short period. We have been working together for just three weeks.

“It is a long-term project. It is not going to change overnight, but tomorrow is part of that process. It is an opportunity to show we can compete against these teams.”

City vs Sevilla preview

A much-changed Manchester City side will take on Sevilla in their final Group G match, with qualification into the Champions League round-of-16 already secured.

With just four City matches left before the World Cup rolls around, make sure to keep up to date with all the latest news, statistics and live scores via the Flashscore app and website.

It may not have been the most entertaining match away to Borussia Dortmund, but City’s goalless draw away to the German giants ensured progression into the Champions League knockouts as group winners.

As Champions League groups are decided on head-to-head records before goal difference, City can afford a defeat on Wednesday night against Sevilla and still finish on top of Group F.

Still unbeaten in the Champions League this season, an imperious start to the campaign saw City cruise to three victories from three against all of Sevilla, Dortmund and FC Copenhagen.

However, back-to-back goalless draws, including last week’s stalemate at the Signal Iduna Park have stunted City’s 100% record in this competition, with some questions raised over Pep Guardiola’s side.

Up until the weekend victory over Leicester City in the Premier League, City had failed to score in each of their last three away fixtures across all competitions.

While mitigating circumstances may have been to blame in each of those three outings, difficulty finding the net has never been something City have struggled with under Guardiola.

What’s more, the recent injury concern surrounding star striker Erling Haaland has poised another attacking problem for City, with the Norwegian sitting out Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Leicester.

Speaking after the weekend’s win, City boss Guardiola confirmed Haaland would sit the mid-week clash against Sevilla out, but not necessarily for fitness reasons.

With the group already wrapped up, Guardiola revealed he would’ve kept Haaland out of the firing line for Wednesday’s match-up.

Haaland is unlikely to be the only City absentee, as a much-changed Blues outfit are expected to take to the field at the Etihad Staidum in mid-week.

Key players like João Cancelo, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva are not likely to see much game time against Sevilla, as Guardiola looks to rotate his side ahead of the World Cup break.

Moreover, injuries to England duo Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips will keep them out of the squad, whereas youngster Cole Palmer is a doubt after missing the weekend match.

So, who will feature? Well, with Haaland out of the side, City’s attack will likely focus on fellow summer singing Julián Álvarez, who has deputised in the Norwegian’s absence this season.

Boasting just one goal in the Champions League to his name, Wednesday’s fixture represents the ideal opportunity for Álvarez to boost his returns ahead of the World Cup.

Elsewhere, Stefan Ortega, as he did against Dortmund, will likely start between the sticks for City, with Ederson handed another mid-week rest.

There could also be minutes from the start for fullback pair Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Rico Lewis, who have mainly featured off the bench for the Blues this season.

Despite the changes, City still boast the firepower needed to blow Sevilla away and a comfortable evening at the Etihad Stadium is expected for Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne admits WC 2022 could be his final

Kevin De Bruyne is 31 and he doesn’t know what will happen in four years.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has conceded that the upcoming World Cup could be his final outing at the tournament.

The 31-year-old remains one of the world’s elite talents and is part of a Belgium side that has long been touted as a future World Cup winner.

The Man City star was part of the squad that reached the quarter-final in 2014 and finished third in the 2018 WC.

With Father Time inevitably catching up with him, De Bruyne has admitted that he is keen to take advantage of the upcoming tournament as he is unsure whether he’ll get another chance to win the World Cup.

“My family are going over for the group stages,” he began. “I am obviously 31 and I don’t know what will happen in four years. This is the first time my kids can come to the World Cup.

“That is why they are coming. It will be special, an event I don’t want them to miss. They are six, four and two. The eldest two of them follow the football a bit but the daughter, not really, but she can go and enjoy the sun and play in the pool.

“I am excited. It will be the third one and it is always special. These events are great as everyone is watching it. It is big but there is no point to stress about it. It is my third time, I understand what is coming and I cannot speak for someone else who will be there for the first time.

“[The timing] is unknown. There is no point worrying about it or thinking about it. You take it as it comes and try and play as well as possible. We are not talking about it with team-mates. The schedule is too hectic. We had two away games quickly after each other.”
