Pep Guardiola has hailed his players in Manchester City regaining their defensive form.
After heavy investments last summer, the Cityzens started off the season quite poorly.
They sit fifth in the table after beating Chelsea 3-1 at the Etihad. That was a turn of form as Guardiola’s side now boast the best defensive record in the Premier League. Ruben Dias has been an excellent addition with John Stones regaining his best form in years.
Even Joao Cancelo has been noticeably good with usual stars Kyle Walker and Ederson stepping up to the plate. City kept another clean sheet in their 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Manchester United.
Guardiola said, “Except [during] the game against Leicester when we were so naive in giving away three penalties, the rest of the games from the beginning of the season were really good in terms of how solid we were and how many chances we conceded but of course lately the back four has been so solid and big thanks to everyone.
“Phil Foden made an incredible effort with intensity and sprints in the last two games. But the back four don’t make stupid mistakes, 1v1, blocking shots, they were brilliant. Everyone is so committed and that helps us.”
City face Birmingham next in the FA Cup third round. A number of players are missing through the COVID contamination.
