One former Sky Blue defender believes that Marc Guehi might be the next captain of Manchester City. The discussion at the Etihad Stadium is quickly moving from the quest for a historic second domestic treble to the leadership debate that will take place this summer as the final weeks of the 2025–2026 campaign progress.
Manchester City has already declared that another post-legend era is definitely underway, as the team is now tied with Arsenal in the Premier League and getting set for an FA Cup final versus Chelsea on May 16.
Long-serving defender John Stones revealed this week that he will also complete his trophy-filled ten-year tenure this summer, while departing club captain Bernardo Silva has declared he will leave as a free agent in June.
Due to these departures and Rodri’s recent injury issues, both supporters and former players are now considering younger players in the locker room, particularly Marc Guéhi, who joined in January, as possible heirs to the armband for the 2026–2027 campaign.
New signing tipped to become next City captain
Former Manchester City and Scotland centre-back Colin Hendry was questioned about the controversy surrounding Bernardo Silva’s replacement as the team’s captain starting in 2026–2027 in an exclusive interview with City Xtra on behalf of 10bet.
“At first, I think Rodri would be a good fit for me. It relies on consistency because he’s been a bit injured lately, Hendry noted. “Maybe Marc Guéhi at the back, but there are two or three candidates,” he went on.
“I don’t mind if it’s a defender or a midfielder. I personally don’t think goalkeepers should be captains; instead, I would rather have an outfield player.
“Bernardo has served Manchester City admirably, but there are more than enough candidates to fill the position.”
With veteran players like Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol out due to injury, Marc Guéhi has rapidly established himself as a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s defence since his £20 million transfer from Crystal Palace in January 2026.
Colin Hendry’s recent suggestion of a leadership bid is far from hypothetical, since Guéhi’s quick assimilation into the Manchester City style of play has exceeded many supporters’ expectations.
