Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards launched a scathing critique of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes following a controversial incident in Sunday’s Manchester Derby.

‘It’s Embarrassing!’ Richards Blasts Bruno Fernandes Over Foden Red Card

Richards labelled Fernandes’ actions as “embarrassing” after the Portuguese midfielder instigated a scuffle that resulted in Phil Foden’s dismissal.

The flashpoint occurred during City’s hard-fought 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

While Erling Haaland grabbed the winning goal on the hour mark, the match pivoted on a moment of petulance.

Fernandes, already on the floor, kicked the back of Foden’s leg in an apparent attempt to win the ball.

Foden reacted by kicking out at the United captain, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to send the City attacker off.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Richards did not hold back on his assessment of the United skipper.

“What about Bruno Fernandes’ action… it’s embarrassing!” Richards exclaimed, pointing the finger at the instigator rather than the retaliator.

Gary Neville attempted to defend the officiating logic, suggesting Fernandes escaped punishment because he was “stood up” while Foden lashed out on the ground.

However, Neville admitted that players often exploit such situations.

“We used to say that if you get kicked in the box, go down and win a penalty. You do try and get players sent off,” Neville confessed.

Roy Keane immediately challenged this cynical view. “I don’t think we tried to get players sent off, I don’t agree with that,” the former United captain fired back.

“You might try and win decisions but you wouldn’t dream of trying to get a player sent off.”

City boss Enzo Maresca also weighed in, insisting Fernandes could have easily seen red himself.

“It can be a red card [for Foden] but in the same action it can be a red card for Bruno,” he said.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, City controlled the game, with Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo hitting the post for United.

The victory leaves United searching for answers, while Fernandes faces scrutiny for his gamesmanship.
