Newcastle United have initiated discussions with Manchester City over a potential deal for Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez as the club looks to bolster their squad ahead of the transfer deadline.

According to David Ornstein, Newcastle have opened negotiations with their Premier League rivals regarding the 24-year-old, who joined City for £50 million during the January 2025 transfer window.

These talks represent one of several exploratory conversations taking place as the Tyneside club evaluates potential reinforcements.
Gonzalez featured 41 times under Pep Guardiola last season but found starting opportunities limited after January, making just two appearances in the starting eleven during that period.
His campaign highlight came when he fired home a stunning long-range winner against Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
The Spaniard featured briefly in Sunday’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, playing the final 11 minutes of the 3-0 loss in Cardiff.
Should he complete a move to St James’ Park, he would become the second Spanish midfielder to depart the Etihad in quick succession, following Rodri’s transfer to Barcelona on Tuesday.
Newcastle currently possess Joelinton, Joe Willock, and Jacob Ramsey as central midfield options, but the need for additional quality and experience has become apparent after last season’s disappointing 12th-placed finish.
Joelinton’s injury will see him miss Sunday’s season opener against Liverpool at St James’ Park, leaving Jaissle short of options for the visit of Andoni Iraola’s side.
Gonzalez would bring not only technical quality but also invaluable experience of competing at the highest level in both the Premier League and Champions League.
A move to Newcastle would offer Gonzalez the regular first-team football he craves, with talks already progressing between the two clubs.
