Manchester City are on the verge of securing a second major midfield departure this year, with promising youngster Jacob Wright set to complete a permanent move to Norwich City.

Manchester City close to sending Jacob Wright in £2M permanent Norwich transfer

The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined Norwich on loan in January, has made a strong impression during his short stint at Carrow Road.

His performances in the Championship have not only earned the admiration of the Canaries’ faithful but also convinced the club’s hierarchy to pursue a long-term deal.

According to MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, the two clubs are now finalising a transfer worth just over £2 million, which will see Wright end his time at the Etihad Stadium and continue his development in East Anglia.

Wright’s exit marks another step in City’s ongoing midfield reshuffle. Despite being part of several matchday squads under Pep Guardiola in the Champions League, Premier League, and Carabao Cup this season, the academy graduate found first-team opportunities limited.

The January arrival of Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto further blocked Wright’s pathway, prompting a joint decision by club and player to find a more suitable environment for his growth.

At Norwich, Wright has found the perfect fit — a club committed to playing progressive, possession-based football, where he can thrive and showcase his full potential.

His attitude and performances since January have made him a fan favourite, and a permanent switch now looks like a natural progression.

For Manchester City, the sale represents smart business. While the club won’t need a direct replacement for Wright, the funds will contribute to their summer transfer strategy.

Etihad chiefs are currently targeting high-profile midfielders, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders, as they plan another rebuild around Guardiola’s evolving tactical demands.

Wirtz, notably, visited City’s Football Academy earlier this week with his parents, holding talks with key figures — a strong sign that the club is serious about reinforcing its midfield ahead of next season.

Wright’s impending exit underlines City’s efficient talent pipeline — developing young stars and reinvesting in elite prospects who can make an immediate impact at the top level.
