Pep Guardiola promotes Nico O’Reilly and James McAtee to Man City first team

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Nico O’Reilly and James McAtee will join Manchester City’s first-team squad for the upcoming season.

After an intense tour of the USA with a youthful squad, Guardiola singled out the two academy stars for their standout performances.

The tour allowed Guardiola to evaluate the club’s emerging talents, with many senior players still on holiday after international duty.

Initially hoping to integrate five or six young players into his squad, Guardiola has now decided to promote only O’Reilly and McAtee, citing their readiness for top-flight competition.

O’Reilly impressed throughout the tour, particularly with his commanding presence against Chelsea and a notable goal against Barcelona.

McAtee also shone, providing two assists in a match and adding a goal against AC Milan, showcasing his potential as a versatile midfielder.

Guardiola praised the progression of his young players during the tour, highlighting their adaptability and skill. “Every game was better than the last,” Guardiola remarked.

“Kalvin Phillips, Erling Haaland, and Jack Grealish were incredible, and our young talents like Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb were exceptional. McAtee and O’Reilly have demonstrated they are ready for the first team.”

The manager also introduced 16-year-old Stephen Mfuni, emphasizing the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

While some players will return to the second team or go out on loan, Guardiola is confident in the future contributions of O’Reilly and McAtee to the first team.

“Both McAtee and O’Reilly will be crucial first-team options,” Guardiola confirmed.

“The others will continue to develop, and we will monitor their progress closely.”
