Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a stark warning to his players, insisting they must “play better” despite a 3-0 victory over West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola says Man City “Not Brave Enough” in 3-0 win
First-half goals from Erling Haaland and a second-half strike from Tijjani Reijnders secured the points, pulling City level with Arsenal at the Premier League summit.
However, Guardiola focused on his team’s flaws in a subdued post-match assessment.
Speaking to the BBC, the Catalan coach dismissed the significance of the table, stating his team’s position was “not the point.”
He expressed frustration with his side’s possession play, suggesting a lack of courage.
“It’s my feeling that we’re not brave enough,” Guardiola said, emphasizing the need to “break the lines” more effectively.
While he praised aspects of the performance, including a solid defensive display and Haaland’s importance, Guardiola made it clear the team remains a work in progress.
“We are still away from where I want us to be,” he admitted, though he noted the “margin to improve” was a positive.
His critical tone contrasted with the match result and the outlook of goalscorer Reijnders. The midfielder believed City controlled large periods of the game.
“Big part of the game we controlled it,” Reijnders said, adding he felt settled at the club after adapting to new tactical demands.
Guardiola did acknowledge his satisfaction at being competitive on all fronts despite injury and absence issues, with the team also in the Champions League and Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Yet, his overriding message was one of demanding higher standards, setting a relentless tone as the title race intensifies.
