The head coach of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, reportedly “agreed” to let go of two “dispensable” players in order to acquire Florian Wirtz. The Premier League champions are in a mini-crisis as they are currently 19th in the standings and have only won one of their last nine games in all competitions. Guardiola just signed an extension to his contract, and he has a tough job because Man City needs to rebuild.
Among the top 20 football players who could become free agents in 2025 is Kevin De Bruyne, whose replacement may be one of his top goals. Despite suffering injuries in recent seasons, De Bruyne is still considered one of the world’s top midfielders. The 33-year-old will be hard to replace, although Wirtz has been mentioned as a possible replacement because of his impressive Bundesliga play for Bayer Leverkusen.
Florian Wirtz is still on Manchester City’s radar
Attending Leverkusen’s 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim were the City scouts. As his team won, Wirtz scored, putting on a strong show in front of the City scouting team. The competition for Florian Wirtz’s services does seem to be expected to intensify in 2025 or during the next summer transfer window. A lot of conjecture will surround his signing before his next club is revealed. According to German news source Kicker, Wirtz would want a price tag of at least €100 million.
Given his unquestionable brilliance and the caliber of his accomplishments, Wirtz’s price tag does appear reasonable. He is among the best young attacking midfielders in Europe, as evidenced by his performances this season. If he does become available this summer or in 2025, Manchester City will have fierce competition to sign the midfield player.
