Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has explained his intense conversation with Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes following a dramatic 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

Pep Explains Post-Match Clash with Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes

The match concluded with heated scenes as Guardiola confronted several Newcastle players after the final whistle.

The loss, sealed by a Harvey Barnes brace that overshadowed a Ruben Dias goal for City, featured several contentious refereeing decisions.

These included a denied penalty claim for Phil Foden and questions over the validity of Newcastle’s winning goal.

The frustrations clearly spilled over for Guardiola, who was seen in animated discussions with Guimaraes and Joelinton, requiring intervention to separate them.

In his post-match interview, Guardiola addressed the incident directly.

He claimed his words to Guimaraes were complimentary, stating he simply wanted to acknowledge the player’s quality and discuss a key moment involving goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

“I said how good he is, and [asked about] the situation with Gigio and what happened,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“Everything is fine.”

Despite this explanation, television footage showed a visibly agitated Guardiola, suggesting the exchange was more tense than his summary implied.

The City boss also sought out referee Sam Barrott after the game, even visiting the official’s dressing room for further discussions.

However, when pressed by reporters to criticize the match officiating, Guardiola declined.

He pointed to past FA Cup final defeats where he accepted unfavorable decisions without complaint.

“I’m not coming here to talk about referees,” he stated, emphasizing that the result would not change.

The defeat leaves Manchester City four points behind league leaders Arsenal.

The team now shifts its focus to the Champions League, where they face Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, aiming to quickly move past this Premier League setback.
