Pep Guardiola has dismissed suggestions that Manchester City’s two victories over Arsenal this season will give his side a psychological edge when the teams meet in the Premier League next weekend.
Guardiola Warns City: Don’t Compare Carabao Cup Final to Arsenal League Clash
The defending champions beat Arsenal in the reverse league fixture earlier in the campaign and also triumphed in the Carabao Cup final.
Those results have underlined City’s dominance over Mikel Arteta’s side this term, even as Arsenal continue to chase the league title.
But Guardiola insists those past encounters carry little relevance ahead of their latest showdown at the Etihad Stadium.
“The question of this week will be that we are playing next week against a team who in 49 games, lost three,” the City manager said, as reported by the Metro.
“In the Champions League games, they didn’t lose once. I know how difficult it is. They’ve won all the games except one, which they drew.”
Guardiola recalled how City entered the Carabao Cup final as complete underdogs.
“Playing the Carabao Cup with Man City completely as underdogs – there was not one person in the country who bet £1 on us – that’s much better.”
He expects a different dynamic this time.
“Now it will be a bit different. Etihad at home, City is on top form, but the respect I have for Arsenal – what they’ve done in the last two or three years, because I know a little bit the manager but the players and the quality.”
Arsenal have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, raising doubts about their ability to handle high-pressure fixtures.
Yet the title race remains alive, and Arteta’s side will feel determined to prove they can compete with the champions when it matters most.
For Arsenal, maintaining focus and resilience will be the priority. Their response on the pitch will ultimately decide whether they can stay in contention as the season reaches its defining stage.
