Pep Guardiola has openly criticized Manchester City’s recent luck, claiming everything has turned against his team since January began.
Pep’s January Blues: City Manager Whines Despite Club’s Huge Transfer Spend
This complaint follows a shocking 3-1 Champions League defeat to Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, who secured their first-ever victory in the competition.
Guardiola’s remarks, however, come despite the club sanctioning over £80 million in new signings during the winter transfer window.
Speaking after the loss, Guardiola expressed clear frustration. “Of course we lost and everything since the new year is against us,” he stated.
He highlighted injuries and a fragile squad, saying, “We have the feeling that everything is going wrong in many details.”
Yet, these grievances overlook substantial financial backing from City’s hierarchy.
The club committed an initial £62.5 million for forward Antoine Semenyo, with additional fees potentially raising the cost, and £20 million for defender Marc Guehi, who had only six months left on his Crystal Palace contract.
Semenyo’s wages reach approximately £150,000 per week, while Guehi’s package with bonuses nears £300,000 weekly. This investment starkly contradicts Guardiola’s narrative of adversity.
The situation contrasts sharply with constraints at rivals like Arsenal.
Last January, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta faced a striker crisis after Gabriel Jesus’s injury but received no new signings, forcing Kai Havertz into an excessive workload.
City, however, demonstrate a pattern of winter spending, having splurged €218 million (£190 million) in January 2025 to address squad issues.
Guardiola’s lament about facing Bodo/Glimt without a full-strength squad seems exaggerated given this context.
While injuries pose challenges, few managers benefit from such lavish mid-season reinforcement.
Consequently, his complaints about misfortune are unlikely to garner sympathy outside the City fanbase, as the club’s aggressive transfer strategy directly counters his claims of everything going wrong.
