Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hailed Rodri’s immediate impact, stating the midfielder “changed the game” upon his return in a tense 0-0 draw at Sunderland.
“He Changed The Game” – Guardiola’s Praise for Returning Star Rodri
The result leaves City four points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League title race.
With the match stagnant and City struggling for rhythm, Guardiola introduced the Spanish international at halftime for the injured Nico González.
Rodri’s presence instantly steadied City’s play, offering composure and incisive passing that had been lacking.
“He changed the game,” Guardiola told reporters.
“He proved in 45 minutes that he is the best in his position. Football is about the players—in our buildup we struggled, and with Rodri we struggled less.
He broke their lines, we moved better. For a year and a half without him, we missed him a lot.”
Rodri, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, has endured a lengthy absence since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in September 2024, starting only four league games since his recovery.
Guardiola emphasized that Rodri’s sustained fitness is now critical for their season. “Hopefully he can stay fit because he makes us a better team,” the manager added.
Despite dominating possession and missing several close-range chances, City failed to break down a resilient Sunderland, who extended their unbeaten home record.
Guardiola acknowledged the difficulty of the venue but rued his side’s missed opportunities.
“It’s a tough place to come,” he said.
“We missed a big amount of chances in the six-yard box. I’m proud of my players against a difficult opponent. We did everything to win.”
The draw compounds a challenging week for City, who now face a quick turnaround before hosting Chelsea.
Their task may be harder due to fresh injury concerns, with winger Savinho also forced off.
“Savinho doesn’t look good,” Guardiola confirmed. “Nico, we will see.”
While the dropped points are a setback, Rodri’s influential return offers City a significant boost for the battles ahead.
