Riyad Mahrez expected to sign new Manchester City contract

Riyad Mahrez and Manchester City have begun contract negotiations as it appears that both Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling will leave the team. The Algerian’s contract has 12 months remaining as of right now.

Mahrez concluded last season as the club’s leading goal scorer in all competitions with 24 goals, five more than any other player. As a result, City wish to extend Mahrez’s contract.

After early talks and negotiations went well, there is anticipation that Mahrez will sign a contract and commit to staying at the Etihad.

City want to keep the 31-year-old winger through 2023 despite Jesus’ impending £45 million+ move to Arsenal and Sterling’s increasing likelihood of joining Chelsea.

Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez, the South American Player of the Year, have joined Pep Guardiola’s attack this summer, giving him the option of six attackers should Sterling go for Stamford Bridge and not be replaced by the team.

Cole Palmer, a highly touted young player who made only four starts last season but contributed to four goals, is destined to serve as Mahrez’s right-side backup while Phil Foden and Jack Grealish are used on the left.

The Algerian international does not appear to be slowing down after having his most productive season statistically (33 contributions to goals in 47 games). After starting the winger in each match of the previous season’s Champions League, Guardiola seemed to have gained confidence in him.

It’s expected that Mahrez will sign the contract, keeping him at the club for more than five years.
