Pep Guardiola is hoping to win trophies again at Manchester City this season, as speculation over his future grows. Manchester City were defeated 2-1 by Newcastle United on Saturday (November 22), dropping them to third place in the Premier League rankings, seven points behind leaders Arsenal.
Guardiola may depart Manchester City at the end of this season, his tenth in command at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola agreed to a contract extension at Manchester City in November 2024, which will expire in June 2027. Vincent Kompany, who formerly played at the Etihad Stadium for 11 years, is reportedly being considered as a potential alternative for Guardiola.
Former Manchester City finance consultant Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider that Kompany is constantly “high on the list” of persons said to be in the running for the manager’s post at the Etihad.
Man City told ideal next manager
Kompany helped City win 12 trophies while captaining the team, and he guided Bayern to the Bundesliga championship last season. Sagna told Oddspedia, “I could see Vincent Kompany returning to Manchester City as manager after Pep Guardiola leaves.”
He is well-known within the club, having played and captained it for many years. I know he loves Manchester as a city, and I believe he remains personally tied to it even after all these years. Borson claimed that any possible contenders to succeed Guardiola would quickly see a drop in performance at their present teams.
“I think clearly someone like Vincent Kompany is always going to be high on the list of people that there’s going to be rumours about, but he’s just signed a contract to 2029,” observed Borson. “Beyond that, I believe it is quite difficult to predict who City would target. There are several highly ranked managers. You simply don’t know.
