5. Maicon

Back in 2012, then manager Roberto Mancini signed Maicon from Inter Milan. The veteran Champions League-winning defender failed to make his mark and managing only 13 outings with his time at City. 

His short time at City was mostly plagued by injuries and inconsistencies on the pitch. This made him one of the players who regretted joining Manchester City.

The Brazilian international struggled for fitness and made only 13 appearances in his only season with City. He then joined Italian side Roma on a free transfer. 

4. Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez arrived from Manchester United in the summer of 2009. The controversial signing didn’t go well with many United fans when City put a billboard with the words “Welcome to Manchester” in Argentinian.

This got under the skin of Sir Alex Ferguson and he said: “It’s City isn’t it? They’re a small club with a small mentality. All they can talk about is Manchester United; they can’t get away from it,” he said, reported by the BBC. “They think taking Carlos Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff.”

Tevez even refused to come on as a substitute in Manchester City’s Group A UEFA Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. He then refused to apologise to then-manager Roberto Mancini for the incident in Munich. In his controversial four seasons with the club, he amassed over 73 goals in 148 appearances.

3. Jerome Boateng

The Bayern Munich defender was signed by Man City back in 2010 from Hamburger in a £10.4 million deal. He made only 16 appearances for the club during his one-year stint at the Etihad. 

He was one of the standout performers in the World Cup but failed to make his mark in English football and was not even named in the 2011 FA Cup final squad. Due to limited game-time in the first team, the German defender decided to leave the club for Bayern Munich.

Boateng said in an interview back in 2011: ‘It is true that I have agreed with Bayern on a four-year deal. Now it is up to Manchester to make it work.

‘My dream is to have a starting spot within a year, hopefully at Bayern, and then I want to win the European championship (with Germany).’

Since his departure from the Premier League and Man City, he won 8 Bundesliga titles and 2 Champions League trophies.

While he’s loved and adored at the Etihad Stadium, and rightfully so, Mario Balotelli used to be one of the lethal strikers in world football. He has scored around 30 goals in 75 matches for the Cityzens.

He used to fight with his teammates during his time at the Etihad. He had arguments with Micah Richards, club captain Vincent Kompany and a few others.

Mario also had a grumpy relationship with then-manager Roberto Mancini. Mancini criticised the Italian striker as a player who lacks discipline after several red cards and club fines.

He finally left for Milan after three controversial years at the Etihad. But his golden days were past indeed. So he ranks pretty high amongst the Players Who Regretted Joining Manchester City.

1. Robinho

The biggest transfer for Manchester City since Sheikh Mansour took over the club in 2008 was a big failure. He was signed from Real Madrid for around £32.5 million and he was meant to be the man to kickstart Man City’s new chapter in world football.

The forward was a massive success in his first season at Manchester, as his flair and goalscoring ability made him a star in the Premier League. Next season, he endured an ankle injury which ruled him out for three months and restricted him to just 10 league appearances.
