Gareth Southgate doubts on Foden's best position

Gareth Southgate pours doubt over Phil Foden’s England role.

Phil Foden came on as a substitute against Ukraine and was given the chance to impress in the middle of the park.

Earlier this year, the youngster expressed his desire to move into this position over the next few years.

But England manager Gareth Southgate insists that Foden doesn’t even play in that role for Pep Guardiola at Man City.

Foden has mostly been utilised in a wide role by Pep and Southgate claims that one of England’s most creative players needs to improve without the ball.

“He doesn’t [play centrally] for his club,” Southgate countered.

“Presumably there is a reason for that. It depends on the level of the game. In the middle of the park, everyone wants to talk about the ‘with the ball’ but there is a lot of detail without the ball. You have to be spot on with pressing angles, your responsibilities and if you don’t, you don’t get the flow of the game.

“You’d have to speak to Pep, who is the best coach in the world, who plays him from wide. He’s always got the freedom to drift if we play him wide. That’s important.”
