Can Manchester City be stopped?

Can Manchester City be stopped?

For the fifth season in six, Manchester City are champions of England. The big financial investment put in the club and a smart manager in Pep Guardiola are paying back in big ways. The Manchester team has an additional feather in its cap; they are European champions, and completed a treble last season. These accolades come with further financial muscle and with an already big and strong team, it will take a lot to stop Manchester City.

A number of teams in the Premier League have strengthened this summer and are still looking to exploit the opportunities in the transfer window. On the contrary, Manchester City have not been in a hurry to bring in new players in the current transfer. In fact, they have seen off a number of their players, and they had a half-hearted approach to West Ham for their then skipper Declan Rice, who has since joined Arsenal in a big money move. City have already released Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer, to join Barcelona. The champions have however brought in Matteo Kovacic from Chelsea and as they aren’t expected to lose a lot of players, they seem still good to go.

Haaland Effect: Can Manchester City be stopped?

The Erling Haaland effect at Manchester City is one factor that really lifted the team last season, and all indications show the Norwegian will keep this going for long. Scoring 36 goals in the Premier League in his first season places Haaland up there alongside the biggest players to have graced the Premier League, yet he has been around for just one season. He has the power, the drive and the movement that most Premier League defenders have failed or struggled to cope with.

Only Harry Kane could get close to Haaland in terms of strikers’ quality in the Premier League, the England skipper scoring six goals less than Haaland that season. With all possibilities indicating Kane could be on his way out of the Premier League, we may wait longer to see another serious challenge on Haaland’s chase for the Golden Boot. City’s dominance at the moment is being spoken about along the same breath as Chelsea’s in Jose Mourinho’s first two seasons in England. The Blues back then were driven by Didier Drogba, a raft of top players to back him, a technically astute manager and a lot of cash flowing after Roman Abramovich’s arrival.

Similar Foundation: Can Manchester City be stopped?

The current City side is almost built on a similar foundation but the difference with the then Chelsea side is the kind of stability the manager is assured of. That makes it very tough to check the team’s dominance in the Premier League, and could even spread to Europe. Even before a ball is kicked in the new season, City stand out as favorites to win the title again and you can access straightforward England Premier League predictions for your bet on this and more on Wincomparator.

With Guardiola in charge, and his future tied to the club, he can make big calls and plan rebuilds and regeneration of his squad without much interference. This will definitely make City a very tough team to beat. Starting the season with a game against newly promoted Burnley will have City as clear favorites. They thrashed Burnley 6-0 in the FA Cup last season and an opening win will set them up well for a confident run. Can Manchester City be stopped?

Let us take another look at what they are doing and how they left Man City!

1. Raheem Sterling – Manchester City most expensive departures

After an outstanding tenure at the Etihad Stadium, Raheem Sterling deserves to go down in Man City history as one of their greatest players.

He scored 131 goals and captured four Premier League championships during his seven years at the club. He was one of the best dribblers and wingers in the world during his time playing under Guardiola, and he was crucial to those victories.

Given that he only had one year left on his contract and that it was time for a change, he was sold to Chelsea for a fair amount of €56.20 million.

2. Ferran Torres – Manchester City most expensive departures

Ferran Torres was a player who hinted that he may become one of the greatest in Europe in his position, thus many Manchester City supporters were disappointed to see him leave in the January 2022 transfer window.

Torres was used in a variety of roles after coming to the Etihad from Valencia in the summer of 2020, including on the wing and as a false nine.

He put up a decent 16 goals across all competitions, but when Barcelona put in a bid of £46 million plus £9 million in add-ons, he made it known that he was desperate to go back to Spain.

The 21-year-old started to make his move as Pep Guardiola refused to obstruct him. At the team, he won the Premier League and an EFL Cup, earning City a sizable profit. He was sold to Barcelona for €55 million.

3. Gabriel Jesus – Manchester City most expensive departures

Gabriel Jesus‘ six-year tenure at Manchester City was unusual. He joined as one of the most promising young players in Brazilian football, and he scored 44 goals in total over the course of the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons thanks to his prolific play.

Jesus was scattered all over the frontline, though, and never quite nailed down a regular starting shirt or a regular position.

As time went on, his chances and goals diminished, and when City signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022, he was no longer needed.

City transferred him to Arsenal for a reasonable €52.20 million with just one year remaining on his deal. He was an essential member of Arteta’s team before his injury in the middle of the season.

Manchester City interested in signing Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde this summer

As Pep Guardiola searches for a new left-back, Manchester City is allegedly mulling a deal for Barcelona star Alejandro Balde

Sergio Gomez’s performances from last season didn’t convince the management, who is eager to add additional competition for him. Last season, Bernardo Silva was frequently forced to play as a left-back, but recently, rumours of his leaving the Etihad have surfaced. Man City is therefore anticipated to sign a new left-sided defender, particularly one who is energetic and poses a danger in the final third. It’s hardly surprising that the Cityzens have linked up with Balde because he can fill that position for them.

The international player from Spain joined the Catalans when he was just eight years old in 2011 and had a fantastic debut campaign at the Nou Camp the previous year. Balde has played 51 times for Barcelona thus far. He has contributed seven assists along with one goal during this time. He is largely regarded as one of Europe’s top young full-backs. In 2024, Balde’s current Barca contract will come to an end. Balde has not yet agreed to an extension, despite the LaLiga giants’ best efforts.

Several clubs have taken notice of his recent performances. Man City has’made a bid’ for Balde, claims Spanish news source Mundo Deportivo. According to the article, a proposal “has arrived from the Etihad stadium.” It has been stated that Man City is prepared to pay Balde a’much greater’ wage than what Barcelona is providing in their agreement. However, Balde is eager to continue his career with the Catalans and has been persuaded to stay at the Camp Nou by his agent Jorge Mendes.

According to Mundo Deportivo, ‘all has been negotiated’ regarding his contract renewal, and he is still anticipated to stay with Barcelona. However, Barcelona may be compelled to accept a sizable offer for Balde given their financial difficulties. At this point, it’s unclear how much Man City is prepared to offer for him. The Premier League champions accepting him despite their recent offer would still be a major surprise.

Guardiola could have to start looking at other options as a result. After his loan agreement with Bayern Munich expired, Joao Cancelo will also be available for selection by Man City in the upcoming season. It would be intriguing to see if Guardiola decides to use the Portugal international as a left-back once more in light of this.

Bernardo Silva is keen to make a move this summer.

The Portuguese playmaker has been linked with a move away from the Etihad after winning the treble with Man City last season.

According to sources, City are ready to accept offers in the region of £45-50million for the attacking midfield star.

A few Saudi Arabian clubs remain interested in the 28-year-old and are ready to offer him astronomical wages for his signature.

On the other hand, Barcelona are long-term admirers of Silva but might rule out a summer move due to his high price tag.

But according to reports, Silva is waiting for PSG to table an offer in the coming days.

“Bernardo Silva is waiting for this PSG deal to come together and if that doesn’t happen very soon I think he will give serious thought to the other possibilities out there.

“There is a strong feeling that the PSG offer comes together but beyond that I think the prime option for him will be to join the Saudi Pro League and discover more about what is truly on offer there for him.

Arsenal would be Man City’s biggest rival in the coming season.

Man City won their fourth Premier League title in five years after pipping Arsenal at the business end of the 2022/23 campaign.

They won 28 of their 38 matches in the division and are set to begin their pre-season in the coming week.

Having also won the Champions League and the FA Cup last season, it is safe to say Pep Guardiola’s men will again be the favourites to win the title next campaign.

He said: “They have to be at 100% to beat any other club, so they are fantastic, but they have to fight.

“They had to fight against Arsenal to finish first, they lost some games against opponents and they really have to be spot on otherwise they are matched, that is the beauty of the Premier League, its because if you don’t give 100%, you’re going to be very badly surprised and that’s what it is.”

Al-Hilal preparing mouth-watering proposal to lure Man City's Bernardo Silva

Al-Hilal are planning to offer Bernardo Silva a salary package worth an eye-watering €50m a year.

Manchester City forward Bernardo Silva is on the radar of the Saudi Pro League club. According to CBS Sports, Al-Hilal are preparing a mouth-watering proposal to sign the Portuguese in the summer.

Silva is likely to leave the club as his future is pretty uncertain. The Man City forward is keen to explore new options, but it is understood a move to the Middle East is not in his plans.

Man City manager has been open about his desire to keep the Portugues at the Etihad, but the club will not stand in his way if a suitable proposal arrives.

The Premier League winners will demand a fee north of €100m to part ways with the former AS Monaco man. He is also a long-term target for Barcelona and PSG.

The Cityzens could be open to negotiating a fee if Silva remains adamant about a summer exit, but the Saudi club will have to convince the versatile forward to move to Asia.

Al-Hilal are planning to offer the Man City forward a salary package worth an eye-watering €50m a year – a proposal which vastly eclipses what he currently earns in Manchester.

Mateo Kovacic is the only signing made by Man City so far.

The Croatian midfielder spent the last five years at Stamford Bridge winning the Champions League and making 221 appearances for the club.

The former Real Madrid midfielder penned a four-year contract with the Cityzens and was brought in to replace Ilkay Gundogan who joined Barcelona on a free transfer this summer.

Man City paid £30m for his services as Kovacic entered the final year of his Chelsea contract.

Ferdinand said: “Man City, Kovacic is a great signing. Obviously they’ve lost Gundogan, the captain, but I think Kovacic is a shrewd signing, at that price as well.

“I think he was £30m and in the current market, that’s huge business, great business. He’s full of experience, won the biggest trophies, and a different player to what they have got in that area.

“He can travel with the ball through the lines, so I think he’s a good signing. I think they’ll go again, City, somewhere else [in the squad].”

Despite continued interest from PSG, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is attempting to keep Bernardo Silva with the team for the upcoming season

Ilkay Gundogan, the club captain, was already gone to Barcelona on a free transfer, and Guardiola still runs the risk of losing Bernardo Silva, who is still rumoured to be leaving the Etihad Stadium despite a possible offer of a new deal.

The 28-year-old played with Manchester City for six seasons, appearing in over 300 games and taking home 14 trophies, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Silva, a midfielder from Portugal, was crucial to City’s first Champions League victory, scoring twice against Real Madrid in the second leg of the semifinal at the Etihad Stadium. Despite having a contract with Manchester City until 2025, the midfielder has been frequently mentioned as a possible club leave. Barcelona and PSG both expressed a keen interest in the player last summer. Following Lionel Messi’s departure, Paris Saint-Germain have rekindled their interest in the 28-year-old. The Saudi Pro League has also made a substantial contract offer to the City player.

In less than two weeks, City is anticipated to return to the City Football Academy for preseason training, with Silva’s status appearing to be still up in the air and Guardiola reportedly pushing to keep the midfielder on the team. Le Parisian assert that negotiations between PSG and City for Bernardo Silva have “not really started” because the City manager is “blocking everything” and “doing everything” to keep the Portuguese star at the Etihad Stadium next season.

Despite Guardiola’s position, the French publication continues to state that Silva is ‘trying to pack up’ and already envisions playing for PSG in the upcoming season. Silva joined Manchester City in 2017 from AS Monaco in Ligue 1, where he had previously played. Silva has experience in the French top division. The 28-year-old is one of several senior City first-team players who have been mentioned as potential summer leave candidates, along with Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, and Kyle Walker.

Gabriel Jesus joined Arsenal last summer ending his five-year spell with Manchester City.

The Brazilian striker went on to make 236 appearances for the Cityzens and win four Premier League titles in those five trophy-laden years.

Jesus was seeking more playing time due to Man City’s summer pursuit of Erling Haaland last year.

He often played second fiddle to Sergio Aguero who used to command the No.9 spot.

Jesus has now opened up on his struggles at Man City and explained how Pep Guardiola made him cry and leave the Etihad.

Jesus said: “There was a Champions League game, PSG, at home, in which he put Zinchenko as a false 9. Crazy thing.

“The day before, he didn’t even use him [Zinchenko] in training, he had put me in as a striker… Zinchenko even joked with me: ‘that day I felt bad for you. I called my mother to talk: ‘I want to leave.’ I’m going home, because he put him [Zinchenko] on, and he didn’t put me on. He put a left-back there. I went crazy.

“There was a lot of that with [Guardiola], and it’s not easy. But one evolves. It is really hard. That’s when I decided, I didn’t want to stay anymore. And I decided to leave.”

RB Leipzig sporting director confirms Josko Gvardiol request to join Man City

Gvardiol and his agents gave their desire to move to Manchester City.

RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed Josko Gvardiol has requested to join Manchester City. The Premier League champions want him and the discussion is going on.

They were in their plan since April and Bundesliga club is planning to get huge amount for the defender. Leipzig have already lost key first team stars like Christopher Nkunku, Konrad Laimer and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer. The departure of Gvardiol will be a big blow to them.

“Gvardiol and his agents gave us their desire to move to Manchester City. We are in talks with City,” Eberl told LVZ.

“Yes, for €100m plus bonuses, Gvardiol will end up in Pep’s strong hands. The value of the deal would make Gvardiol the most expensive defender in history. But it might take a few more days.”

His arrival would add to Man City’s strength in central defence. Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji and John Stones made their defense stronger in 2022/23 campaign.

City confirmed the arrival of Croatia international midfielder Mateo Kovacic before club captain Ilkay Gundogan’s free transfer to Barcelona upon the expiry of his contract.
