According to Pep Guardiola, Kalvin Phillips “will start” in tomorrow’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Newcastle

Phillips, who hasn’t started for City since their season-ending home game against Chelsea last year, will take the pitch for the first time this year, according to Pep.

After joining the club for £42 million from Leeds United last summer, it will be his sixth start for the organisation. Since then, the Englishman has found it difficult to crack the starting lineup due to Rodri’s superior talent in the position.

However, City are without John Stones, Bernardo Silva, and Kevin De Bruyne, and Rodri is suspended for three games after receiving a red card against Nottingham Forest. Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovacic are both back in the lineup.

The encounter against Newcastle will also mark the start of four straight away games for Guardiola and his team, with trips to Wolves, RB Leipzig, and Arsenal following.

Given the high level of talent in their roster, Manchester City generally dominates this competition, but last year they were eliminated by a shocking loss to Southampton in the quarterfinals. From 2018 to 2021, City won the Carabao Cup four times in a row. They are still considered one of the favourites to win it this year, despite Pep prioritising other games.
