Illan Meslier, the custodian for Leeds United, has been rejected by Manchester City

Florian Plettenberg, a journalist for Sky Germany, claims that the Premier League champions were recently offered the chance to recruit the French player. There has been a bit of a goalkeeping transfer merry-go-round, which may have necessitated City bringing in Meslier.

This week, it was claimed that Bayern Munich was considering Stefan Ortega, City’s back-up custodian, as a replacement for injured Manuel Neuer. A similar action would have forced Pep Guardiola’s team to locate more Ederson coverage before the window shut. However, according to this most recent report from Plettenberg, a transfer for Ortega to Bayern is now on the verge of failing since City are uninterested in bringing in a new backup custodian.

Despite the fact that several candidates, including Leeds custodian Meslier, have reportedly been given the position in recent hours, including the treble champions from the previous campaign. There appears to be no longer be any prospect for Meslier to transfer from Elland Road to The Etihad in the next weeks.

The Frenchman, who joined Leeds at the beginning of the 2019–20 campaign, has mostly been the club’s top pick for the position since their promotion to the Premier League in the summer of 2020. Meslier has played 129 times for the Whites in all competitions, however he did lose his starting spot towards the conclusion of the previous campaign when Leeds was relegated back to the Championship due to some costly mistakes.

The Frenchman has since taken back the top spot under new manager Daniel Farke, starting each of the club’s Championship games this year despite the summer’s acquisition of Karl Darlow from Newcastle United. Currently, Meslier’s contract with Leeds has three years left, ensuring his future at Elland Road through the end of the 2025–26 season. Naturally, this implies that the club would be well-positioned to negotiate any bids that might be made for him.
