Manchester City is planning a surprise acquisition of left-back Aaron Hickey from Brentford

The Cityzens are interested in the Scotland international, who only joined the Bees last summer for for €15 million. Although he has yet to contribute a goal in the Premier League, Hickey has excelled in his first season with Brentford. Brentford is eager to make a profit on the Scottish defender, so City will have to fork over €30m to obtain his services.

Man City has been seeking to bolster the left-back position ever since the unfortunate departure of Joao Cancelo, who abruptly quit to join Bayern Munich in the January transfer window.

The adaptable Portuguese defender signed a loan agreement with Bayern, but the German champions have the option to purchase him for €70 million. Bayern is hesitant to spend so much money on a player who has had trouble securing a starting position since moving to Germany.

Hickey is a smart defensive player who can play on either side of the back four. This season, he has won 62% of his ground battles. He might be a wise addition to Man City’s defensive unit, especially because Kyle Walker and Sergio Gomez are having trouble getting into games. Gomez joined the Cityzens from Anderlecht last summer, but he has had trouble getting on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium.

Only 19 of the 22-year-old’s games have come in all competitions, and he has only contributed one assist, which came in the Premier League. But in Saturday night’s 3-0 FA Cup semi-final triumph over Sheffield United, the Spanish defender did a commendable job. Hickey might be the boost the team needs in the backline given Walker’s recent downturn and his minor participation in Man City’s season.
