Pep Guardiola wanted to sign Kounde back in 2020.

The Frenchman joined Barcelona this summer in a deal worth around £47m and is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in Europe.

Man City signed Ruben Dias in 2020 for £62m who then went to be the Premier League Player of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association and was voted City’s player of the season.

But Guardiola wanted to sign Kounde in 2020 who eventually joined Sevilla in that summer.

Jules Kounde spoke to El Pais this week that Man City were interested in him two summers ago.

“In my first year at Sevilla [2020] Guardiola called me. He told me that he loved me and that he believed I would fit the way City play,” he said.

“I talked a lot about football with both of them [Guardiola and Barcelona boss Xavi]. I realised that they had both seen me play and knew my abilities perfectly. They weren’t just talking: they were very precise conversations.”

Pep Guardiola never guarantees playing time to any of his players.

The Catalan manager’s infamous rotational policy was seen in matches against Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the club friendlies.

Guardiola told several times how he does not have a set starting eleven in mind and picks players in accordance with the opponent.

John Stones who has been at the club since 2016 is familiar with Pep’s habit of constantly chopping and changing.

He said to Manchester Evening News: “The main thing that we’ve got is incredible people in our squad.

“We all know that we’re all going to play a major part within our team.

“We obviously all want to play every week but at the same time, we all know that the manager uses us all and in different situations and against different teams.

“Because we all have different individual qualities that are better for certain teams or players or whatever that might be.”

Stones continued, “He keeps us on our toes and keeps us fighting and pushing us against each other.

“But something special is we have just a defensive unit that all of us want each other to do well if the other person is playing.”

Borussia Dortmund has been coping well without the Norwegian.

Club director Sebastian Kehl admitted he was relieved to let the Norwegian forward leave as he became a ‘burden’ on the club.

Dortmund was won all except one of their six first matches of the new season.

Kehl also admits that he wished Haaland left earlier so that the club could prepare for his absence.

“As much as we have always appreciated Erling and the success he has had with our shirt, in the end the matter had definitely become a burden, both in the dressing room and for the club,” he told Sport Bild.

“In general, for the whole environment, it was just him. The timing of the sale was right, both for us and for City. The fact that our first 10 goals this season have been scored by 10 different players proves it.”

“I would have liked to have been certain a little earlier, because that issue limited our preparation,” he added.

“Without him, we have the possibility to trust the other players. The fact that our first ten competitive goals have been scored by ten different players shows that pretty well.”

Thierry Henry backs Mbappe as the better player between the two.

Summer signing Erling Haaland has already registered 12 goals in his last eight games this season and is a favourite to win the Golden Boot this year.

He has started every game for Manchester City so far this season.

Mbappe on the other hand scored a brace in PSG’s last Champions League clash against Juventus.

There has been a lot of debate among pundits and fans over who the better player is.

But Thierry Henry believes Mbappe is an overall better player than Erling Haaland.

He told CBS: “Mbappe can create and finish. Haaland doesn’t create. He finishes.

“Mbappe can play on the right and on the left. He can play in the middle. Haaland can only play in the middle.

“He is a magnificent player and with him they can win the Champions League last year. Against Real Madrid, if it was him at the end of those chances that they missed, they will have been focused on scoring one or two. For now, Mbappe is still my vote.”

Man City are favourites to retain the title this year.

The Cityzens have been the most dominant team in the Premier League in the past few years winning the title four times in five years.

Liverpool finished just one point behind Man City last season but had a disappointing start to the new season.

Ex-City and Arsenal star Bacary Sagna believes Arsenal would be the biggest threat to Man City this season due to Liverpool’s slow start to the Premier League.

He told Betway: ‘I feel Arsenal can be the main competition to Man City for the Premier League title, who of course remain the very strong favourites.

‘I don’t see any other team that can challenge them. Of course you can’t totally rule out Liverpool, but they have lost Sadio Mane and don’t look the same without him.

‘Mane and Mohamed Salah complemented each other so well and were so consistent, I’m not sure Liverpool will be feared in quite the same way this season.

‘With Arsenal having made a great start it feels like they could be the main contenders to compete with this incredible Manchester City side for the Premier League title.’

Pep Guardiola claimed his squad cannot become too focused on Haaland in the coming months.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has warned his side cannot rely on Erling Haaland to fire them to Champions League glory.

Haaland is currently the leading goal-scorer in Premier League with 10 goals including two hattricks. The former Borussia Dortmund striker completed a £51.2m contract this summer.

The 22-year-old has hit the ground running in his first weeks at City and proved his worth.

The Cityzens will kick off their European campaign away at Sevilla in Group G tomorrow.

Man City boss claimed his squad cannot become too focused on Haaland in the coming months, despite his record of 23 Champions League goals in the last three seasons.

“If we rely all on Erling’s shoulders we don’t win the Champions League”, as per reports from BBC Sport.

“I understand everyone talks about Erling, but I have three, four, five new players, and it’s important they all settle.

“We don’t win just because of Erling and we don’t lose just because of Erling. He has a special quality and solves some problems.”

Sevilla have struggled so far in 2022/23, with just one point picked up from four league games.

Man City were held at Villa Park on Saturday night.

The Cityzens drew 1-1 against struggling Aston Villa and has lost Kyle Walker to an injury on that afternoon.

“He had to be substituted because he had some problems in the first half,” Guardiola said. “He continued but at the end he could not continue.

“We will see (how he is). I didn’t speak with the doctors.”

Guardiola explains what to expect when they visit Sevilla on Tuesday night for their round-of-16 Champions League tie.

“Normally I am a positive person in general,” Guardiola said to the season ahead of the Group G opener.

“In general you analyse every game, the performance. We have dropped four points so far and now we have the Champions League.

“Every game away is difficult in the Premier League – Newcastle, today – I know how difficult it is and the opponents are really good.

“The titles we won in the past were difficult and this will be no exception.

Ederson explains the key to Man City’s success.

The Man City goalkeeper has established himself as one of the best keepers in the Premier League and has won the Golden Glove for three seasons in a row.

The 29-year-old explains his development as a player and the reason behind his and the club’s success.

Ederson said: “Time flies. I grew a lot in my time at Manchester City, not only as a player, but as a person too. I feel more mature now. Every day is a learning experience. Every day I try to learn something new and develop.

“The recipe is to work hard, help my teammates and help the team. I honestly feel very happy. I feel very fulfilled here in this club that experienced huge growth in the last few years. You can tell from the number of trophies we have won.

“But we are always searching for more, always trying to improve ourselves and working hard every day. The Premier League is a fascinating championship.

“You need to give your 100 per cent in every game, there aren’t easy games regardless of the team you are facing. It’s important that the team manage to have several wins in a row, knowing how difficult it is with so many great teams and playing every three days.”
