Pep Guardiola hails Manchester City’s youngest Champions League goalscorer

Pep Guardiola hails Manchester City’s youngest Champions League goalscorer

Guardiola substituted Lewis five minutes from time and he scored a goal.

Pep Guardiola admired the teenage star Rico Lewis as something special. The 17-year-old became Manchester City’s youngest Champions League goalscorer on Wednesday.

The right-back marked his first senior start by netting City’s equaliser as they came from behind to beat the Spanish giants 3-1 in their final Champions League group game. Man City have already qualified for the round of 16.

It was a sweet moment for the Manchester-born youngster, who took full advantage of an opportunity to play in the continuing absence of injured Kyle Walker.

“We don’t give presents because he is a Man City fan or from the academy,” said City manager Guardiola. “You have to earn it.

“But we’ve seen him since day one of pre-season. This guy has something special.

“Defensively he is aggressive and with the ball he is so good. Of course he has a lot to improve but the academy here is working amazingly.”

Lewis was substituted five minutes from time and, as he was on the far side of the field at the time, earned a huge reception as he walked around the field back to the bench.

“He made a standing ovation all the way round,” said Guardiola. “He played really good.

“He is 17 years old but he is so clever, so intelligent. You say something, he understands everything. I’m happy for him.”

Alvarez is also doing great. The Argentian scored one and provided the passes for the other two goals.

Guardiola said: “There is no one player in the locker room who is not happy for him. He is a special guy. He was patient and found the space and got the rewards he deserved.”

There had been little riding on the game with City already through to the last 16 as Group G winners.

Guardiola added: “Of course we had qualified but we finished well. For the money and the prestige it is good for the club. It was a good night for us, especially the second half.”

Jorge Sampaoli believes Manchester City long deserved to win the Champions League

Man City hammered Sevilla 4-0 in their Champions League opener in September.

Veteran Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli admits Manchester City have long deserved to win the Champions League.

Sampaoli will measure his side up against Pep Guardiola’s side in their final Group G game of this year’s Champions League on Wednesday.

City reached into the final of the UEFA Champions League 2021 but lost to their Premier League rivals, Chelsea. They have already secured their place in the last 16 for the 10th successive season and are among the favourites to finally claim the top prize.

“In the project of Guardiola I think City have made great achievements,” said former Argentina boss Sampaoli in his pre-match press conference at the Etihad Stadium.

“I think he would made a huge difference to any team in the world, but the Champions League is a very individual, special tournament.

“They have not managed to win it yet, but, from the way they play, they may have deserved to have won it more than once.

“I think they are better than any team in England and some teams in the Champions League, but football is a funny game. The best teams don’t necessarily win trophies all the time.

“But I really value what City have achieved, not just in one year, but in the whole period of Guardiola managing here. He has shown consistency that no team in the world has been able to reproduce at any point.”

City hammered Sevilla 4-0 in their group opener in September, one of a string of poor results that culminated in the sacking of Julen Lopetegui as manager last month. The club appointed 62-year-old Argentinian Sampaoli for a second spell.

They have won just one of their five LaLiga games since and are sitting at the 18th spot. They won against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League last time out but are already confirmed in third place in the group and play Europa League.

“It is basically a way of consolidating the plans we have been putting in place,” said Sampaoli.

“It is almost impossible to get rid of bad habits in a short period. We have been working together for just three weeks.

“It is a long-term project. It is not going to change overnight, but tomorrow is part of that process. It is an opportunity to show we can compete against these teams.”

A much-changed Manchester City side will take on Sevilla in their final Group G match, with qualification into the Champions League round-of-16 already secured.

With just four City matches left before the World Cup rolls around, make sure to keep up to date with all the latest news, statistics and live scores via the Flashscore app and website.

It may not have been the most entertaining match away to Borussia Dortmund, but City’s goalless draw away to the German giants ensured progression into the Champions League knockouts as group winners.

As Champions League groups are decided on head-to-head records before goal difference, City can afford a defeat on Wednesday night against Sevilla and still finish on top of Group F.

Still unbeaten in the Champions League this season, an imperious start to the campaign saw City cruise to three victories from three against all of Sevilla, Dortmund and FC Copenhagen.

However, back-to-back goalless draws, including last week’s stalemate at the Signal Iduna Park have stunted City’s 100% record in this competition, with some questions raised over Pep Guardiola’s side.

Up until the weekend victory over Leicester City in the Premier League, City had failed to score in each of their last three away fixtures across all competitions.

While mitigating circumstances may have been to blame in each of those three outings, difficulty finding the net has never been something City have struggled with under Guardiola.

What’s more, the recent injury concern surrounding star striker Erling Haaland has poised another attacking problem for City, with the Norwegian sitting out Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Leicester.

Speaking after the weekend’s win, City boss Guardiola confirmed Haaland would sit the mid-week clash against Sevilla out, but not necessarily for fitness reasons.

With the group already wrapped up, Guardiola revealed he would’ve kept Haaland out of the firing line for Wednesday’s match-up.

Haaland is unlikely to be the only City absentee, as a much-changed Blues outfit are expected to take to the field at the Etihad Staidum in mid-week.

Key players like João Cancelo, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva are not likely to see much game time against Sevilla, as Guardiola looks to rotate his side ahead of the World Cup break.

Moreover, injuries to England duo Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips will keep them out of the squad, whereas youngster Cole Palmer is a doubt after missing the weekend match.

So, who will feature? Well, with Haaland out of the side, City’s attack will likely focus on fellow summer singing Julián Álvarez, who has deputised in the Norwegian’s absence this season.

Boasting just one goal in the Champions League to his name, Wednesday’s fixture represents the ideal opportunity for Álvarez to boost his returns ahead of the World Cup.

Elsewhere, Stefan Ortega, as he did against Dortmund, will likely start between the sticks for City, with Ederson handed another mid-week rest.

There could also be minutes from the start for fullback pair Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Rico Lewis, who have mainly featured off the bench for the Blues this season.

Despite the changes, City still boast the firepower needed to blow Sevilla away and a comfortable evening at the Etihad Stadium is expected for Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne admits WC 2022 could be his final

Kevin De Bruyne is 31 and he doesn’t know what will happen in four years.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has conceded that the upcoming World Cup could be his final outing at the tournament.

The 31-year-old remains one of the world’s elite talents and is part of a Belgium side that has long been touted as a future World Cup winner.

The Man City star was part of the squad that reached the quarter-final in 2014 and finished third in the 2018 WC.

With Father Time inevitably catching up with him, De Bruyne has admitted that he is keen to take advantage of the upcoming tournament as he is unsure whether he’ll get another chance to win the World Cup.

“My family are going over for the group stages,” he began. “I am obviously 31 and I don’t know what will happen in four years. This is the first time my kids can come to the World Cup.

“That is why they are coming. It will be special, an event I don’t want them to miss. They are six, four and two. The eldest two of them follow the football a bit but the daughter, not really, but she can go and enjoy the sun and play in the pool.

“I am excited. It will be the third one and it is always special. These events are great as everyone is watching it. It is big but there is no point to stress about it. It is my third time, I understand what is coming and I cannot speak for someone else who will be there for the first time.

“[The timing] is unknown. There is no point worrying about it or thinking about it. You take it as it comes and try and play as well as possible. We are not talking about it with team-mates. The schedule is too hectic. We had two away games quickly after each other.”

Kevin de Bruyne would play his last World Cup in Qatar.

The Belgium midfielder scored the winner in Man City’s latest 1-0 victory over Leicester City.

Belgium will play matches against Canada, Morocco and Croatia in Group F.

The 31-year-old will play in his third World Cup this year in Qatar which could probably be his last.

He said: “My family are going over for the group stages. I am obviously 31 and I don’t know what will happen in four years. This is the first time my kids can come to the World Cup.

“I am excited. It will be the third one and it is always special. These events are great as everyone is watching it. It is big but there is no point to stress about it. It is my third time, I understand what is coming and I cannot speak for someone else who will be there for the first time.

“It is unknown (the timing). There is no point worrying about it or thinking about it. You take it as it comes and try and play as well as possible. We are not talking about it with team-mates. The schedule is too hectic. We had two away games quickly after each other.”

Man City target Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to make phenomenal move at Etihad

Napoli’s chiefs want to include a £65m release clause into Kvaratskhelia’s deal.

Manchester City target Khvicha Kvaratskhelia might be making a move at Etihad, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Kvaratskhelia has been in top form for Napoli in the opening stages of the current season, reportedly catching the eye of the reigning Premier League champions in the process.

The Georgia international only arrived at the Naples side from Dinamo Batumi in the summer after completing a £10 million switch, ending a brief four-month stint back in his homeland.

Kvaratskhelia linked up with Dinamo in March after departing Rubin Kazan as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine allowed foreign players to suspend their contracts.

The Sun have reported that the Cityzens are ‘keeping tabs’ on Kvaratskhelia, yet they could face extensive competition from European heavyweights Real Madrid and PSG for his signature.

Napoli are determined to keep hold of their prized asset for a little while longer, though, and despite him having four-and-a-half-years left to run on his £25,000-per-week contract, they are said to be set to offer him fresh terms.

It’s added that Napoli’s chiefs want to include a £65m release clause into Kvaratskhelia’s deal, protecting themselves from any interested party.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Jones said: “It’s been a rapid rise for him so far, and if he got to City this quick, it would be pretty phenomenal to get up to that level.

“But he’s one of the most in-form players in the whole of Europe at the moment, he’s made a significant impact on that team.”

Pep Guardiola only has Jack Grealish who is a natural option in that position within his first-team squad, meaning there could be plenty of opportunities for Kvaratskhelia to shine.
