Both the defenders have known each other for the past two decades.

Man United defender Harry Maguire struggle for consistency this season and was dropped from the first-team squad by manager Erik Ten Hag.

“First of all, no doubt at all,” Stones replied when asked if Maguire would settle in this World Cup.

“Harry hasn’t played much at his club, but to come in and play like he did – I don’t think anyone saw a bit of rust on him.

“That’s great credit to him and I’m so happy for him and everyone who played. As a player you want and need to be playing and have a good rhythm. But for him to come in to play as he did is credit to him.”

Guardiola is understood to have agreed to a new two-year contract extension at Etihad.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is supposed to get an extension on his contract. It means that the club can “guarantee the framework remains in place” if they look to bring young talents such as Jude Bellingham and Youssoufa Moukoko to the Etihad Stadium, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The former Catalan boss is expected to sign a new deal at the Etihad Stadium imminently.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Guardiola is understood to have agreed to a new two-year contract extension at Etihad, which would see the Spaniard stay at the club until 2025.

The same source reports that the agreement was sealed on a visit to meet the City owners in Abu Dhabi.

This will come as a boost to the club, who have won nine trophies, including four Premier League titles, since the former Bayern Munich manager arrived in Manchester in the summer of 2016.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “City have been hoping to get this Pep contract tied down so it would help with the next phase of rebuilding the team.

“It means they can turn to Bellingham or Moukoko or any other amazing young talent and guarantee the framework remains in place.

“It’s a really big moment and bad news for their rivals.”

With Guardiola now looking likely to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City fans will be breathing a sigh of relief as the club can now plan for life with him.

According to Ben Jacobs, City could be among the potential suitors for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid also in the running for the England international’s signature.

The same journalist has suggested that former Dortmund teammate and current City striker Erling Haaland could play a part in encouraging the £130m valued star to make the move to the Etihad Stadium either in January or next summer.

Meanwhile, Football Insider understands that City have now joined the race for 18-year-old Dortmund striker Moukoko, with the young striker having less than a year remaining on his current deal at the Bundesliga club, suggesting that there’s a look to the future in the Citizen’s transfer plans in upcoming windows.

Laporte is key to Enrique’s plans in World Cup 2022.

Man City defender Aymeric Laporte has insisted Spain have a real chance of glory at the 2022 World Cup.

The centre back was a major injury doubt ahead of the World Cup after undergoing knee surgery in June. But, the Spaniard put together a solid run of form following his return to the City side in October, and Luis Enrique immediately reinstalled him to the squad.

He started at left back in the 3-1 pre-World Cup friendly win against Jordan but he is expected to switch inside for the Group E opener against Costa Rica.

Laporte started in Spain’s all six games at Euro 2020 last summer. He is key to Enrique’s plans in the Middle East.

“Why can’t Spain be world champions? Like all the national teams here, well have strong points”, as per reports from Marca.

“Most of us compete at the highest level. We work well with the coach and we have everything we need to win.

“But in this type of tournament, luck and other factors are needed. We will do everything to win.”

Pau Torres and Eric Garcia played three games each as Laporte’s partner in the European Championships with the former appearing to have the edge to start against Los Ticos.

Phil Foden has struggled to replicate his club form with England.

The four-time Premier League winner will be playing his part in Qatar with the England national team.

He is one of the highest-profile players who is expected to have a huge influence in the England squad.

The 22-year-old was asked whether he belongs to the elite group of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Foden said: “No, definitely not. The people you’ve just mentioned there are way above me at the moment but I like to think I could be there one day.

“It’s all about taking small steps in the right direction. I just want to take my club form into the national team. With my club form this year, I’ve been scoring a lot of goals and I want to bring that to the national team.

“Have England seen the best of me? Definitely not. I don’t think it is easy coming into a team and not knowing the players very well.

“You have to learn to play with different players and what they like best — running behind, or wanting balls to feet. Just little details like that. I have had enough experience in the England team to understand the players. Hopefully I can bring that into the World Cup.”

Cristiano Ronaldo confirms he was contacted by Man City last summer.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson was the reason behind the veteran’s move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021.

Man City were heavily linked with the Portuguese international that summer but Ronaldo ultimately chose his former club.

“Well, honestly, it was close… but as you know, as my history is Manchester United. Your heart, you’re feeling the way these two that you did before, make the difference. And of course, as well, Sir Alex Ferguson,” Ronaldo told Piers Morgan in his interview on TalkTV.

“So I was surprised. And the same way, but it was a conscious decision. Because the heart speaks, speaking loud in that moment.

“I think it was the key (Ferguson). It was the difference in that moment. I wouldn’t say that Manchester City wasn’t close. But I think, I did [make] a conscious decision. Sir Alex Ferguson was the key.

“Yes, I did. I spoke with him… He said to me that, ‘It’s impossible for you to come to Manchester City’. And I say, ‘OK, Boss’.”

Galatasaray hopes to sign him for free in the summer transfer window.

According to fresh reports from Manchester Evening News, Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan’s career at the Etihad Stadium could be coming to an end as Galatasaray hope to lure him to Turkey.

The German star is in the last year of his contract with the Premier League winners. The Turkish club hopes to sign him for free in the summer transfer window.

Gundogan has had a brilliant start to his campaign this season. The Gelsenkirchen-born sensation is putting in some influential displays at the center of the park. He has scored two goals and created two assists for the Sky Blues so far across all fronts.

Ilkay Gundogan is a real hard worker as he is relentless both in offence and defence; he possesses a high work rate while maintaining his composure on the pitch.

The 31-year-old German can time his tackles well and make some crucial interceptions to win the ball back for his side. Pep should now take a call on him as he is in the final months of his contract.

If the former Barca head decides to sanction exit for the midfielder he would have to identify a decent replacement to fill in his shoes which could deem to be a very difficult task.

Benjamin Mendy is currently on trial at Chester Crown Court.

The Man City defender has denied seven counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault against six women.

Pep Guardiola was summoned to give a character witness at the trial of defender Benjamin Mendy.

He explained that he has no idea what Mendy did outside the pitch or in his spare time.

“I’m not his father,” he told the jury.

Guardiola then further explained how he first met got to know about the French defender.

He said: “We were really impressed as a club, he had the potential to play with us.

“I think he’s a generous boy and very quickly adapted to the team. I would say he was happy when he could help the other [players]. I remember, when you asked him something for his mate or for the club, always he was able to do it.

“And he’s a funny boy. He was the player that was the happiest the most – I would say more than on the pitch – in the training sessions.”

Ilkay Gundogan feels Manchester City slipped up badly in losing to Brentford

Ilkay Gundogan feels Manchester City slipped up badly in losing to Brentford

“Sometimes it is difficult to have an explanation,” said midfielder Gunodgan.

Ilkay Gundogan admits Manchester City slipped up badly in losing to Brentford in their final match before the World Cup break.

The reigning Premier League winners slumped to a surprise 2-1 reverse at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to fall five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

It was a not a happy note to sign off on as domestic football now shuts down for more than a month for the World Cup.

“Sometimes it is difficult to have an explanation,” said midfielder Gunodgan. “I don’t know, there is no excuse.

“It is always tough to analyse, especially when you feel like you were not there and you were sloppy with the balls and easy passes.

“We lost possession quite easily and then this transmits to the goals we conceded. It was way too easy from, our point of view, to concede two goals. Unfortunately, they punished us.

“We couldn’t do it well enough today and it is so unnecessary and so disappointing.”

Brentford successfully kept Erling Haaland silent on his return after injury. The Norway international was closely watched and starved of service.

The Germany international said: “It felt like we crossed a lot of balls in areas where Erling was, but he was always against three men.

“I felt like especially getting the ball in between the lines of their defence because their back four or five were quite deep, but there was no space between the midfield and the back five.

“I also tried to make a few runs to the first post and every time I ran there, I felt like I was so free because Erling got all of the attention. It is disappointing and frustrating.”

City wil now host Liverpool in Carabao Cup in the week before Christmas. Their next league outing is at Leeds on December 28.

Manager Pep Guardiola said: “Now we will be a little bit behind but it is what it is. The second part of the season will dictate how we are and if we can do it.”
