Pep Guardiola was left disappointed and angry with Jurgen Klopp’s comments.

The Reds boss said that City have had more rest unlike Liverpool, which irritated Pep.

“We didn’t have a break, I think City had a two-week break for Covid reasons,” Klopp had said.

“It’s really tough, it’s a tough year, a tough season, I know for some teams it looks like lesser, but for us obviously for the reasons you know, it’s tough.”

“He [Klopp] made a mistake, it was two months off, or three months… no four months we have off. That’s why we’re in top four now… Jurgen has to see the calendar again,” Guardiola said.

“We had covid, we had one week and we played with 14 players at Stamford Bridge.”

“I’m surprised, I thought Jurgen was not that type of manager, like other ones who usually do it, so I didn’t expect that comment,” the City boss added.

“Maybe it was a misunderstanding. If he sees the calendar again, he will realise… it was not two weeks.”

Liverpool face City on Sunday but the war or words has already begun.

Guardiola upset by Klopp’s comment over Man City’s Covid break.

The Cityzens had their game against Everton postponed on December 28 after a few staff members tested positive.

So they had a gap of eight days before their trip to Chelsea on January 3.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes fatigue and injury is playing a huge part in the squad’s inadequate form.

“We didn’t have a break,” said Liverpool manager Klopp. “I think City had a two-week break for COVID reasons.”

Guardiola was surprised by Klopp’s comments and said he would discuss the matter when they meet on Sunday.

Guardiola said: “He made a mistake. It was two months off, or three months off? No, (it was) four. Four months off.

“That’s why we are in top form right now. Jurgen has to see the calendar again. We had COVID, we have one week and we played with 14 players at Stamford Bridge.

“But maybe I’m wrong and it was not two weeks, it was three or four weeks. Tomorrow when I see Jurgen I’ll say to him: ‘How many weeks or days were we off?’

“I’m surprised. I thought Jurgen was not that type of manager, like other ones who are usually doing it. I didn’t expect that comment.

“But maybe it was a misunderstanding from him. If he sees the calendar again he will realise it was not two weeks, it was two months.”

Beat City no matter what – Carragher warns Liverpool

Beat City no matter what - Carragher warns Liverpool
Bildbyran

Jamie Carragher has laid down the marker for Liverpool ahead of their match against Manchester City.

“Liverpool have to be looking at the top four positions, and to say the obvious, take each game as it comes because the form is so down,” Carragher said.

“There are so many changes to the team that you are never quite sure what it’s going to be. Alisson was out at the last minute against Brighton and Liverpool are still waiting for players to come back.

“So, I think from now, if you were to offer Liverpool a top-four finish they would take that and shake on it. That should be the mindset for Liverpool because that is what they are aiming for at the moment.

“If they could get back into the title race – and, to do that, they would have to beat City on Sunday – you could maybe see where they are with seven or eight games to go. Hopefully from Liverpool’s perspective, City could have some sort of drop.”

But Carragher stressed on City’s record winning run: “It’s impossible to keep that going, City cannot win every single game so I would expect them to drop points at some stage.

“But the problem for Liverpool is that the gap is too big – and it certainly will be if they fail to win at Anfield.”

Goater in awe of Mahrez talent

Riyadh Mahrez is a generational talent, at least that is what Goater believes.

“When Pep rotates, players come in and there is absolute quality in abundance,” said Goater on last night’s We’re Not Really Here match show.

Mahrez excites me, you know he wants to go on his left, but you don’t know when!

“He is pure quality. I’m excited to see these players produce quality, make no mistake it isn’t easy to do what they do every three or four days, but these guys play at a high level.

“We had to be on our game because Burnley made it tough and compact, but we were.

“And with Ilkay Gundogan ghosting up and down the pitch – I love him – always looking to get Mahrez in the game, it’s looking really good for us.”

“The confidence we have, I can’t see teams catching us if we keep playing as we are.

“You look at other teams and think could they go unbeaten?

“But City have done it before. Clean sheets, creativity and goals scored so Pep will be a happy man.

“With the momentum and style we are going with at the moment, Sunday should be a great game.

“Yes Liverpool have shown flashes of form lately, but it’s going to be an awesome game with the two great managers going head-to-head together again.”

“Mahrez is probably not 100 per cent happy because he would like to play more with Manchester City. He’s a fighter who wants to play all the games for his team,” said Algerian boss Djamel Belmadi to DZ Foot.

“I can’t ask him to leave his club to play more at another, I’m not his agent. But, the most important thing is for him to maintain his fitness and to be ready for the national team’s next games.

“He’s our captain. I understand the fear of the fans, but, in my view, he’s got the ability to bounce back once again. I trust him.”

John Terry has backed Man City to win the title this season.

The Cityzens are at the top of the table after 21 matches with 47 points.

They are currently on a 13-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Manchester City had a dreadful strat this season but somehow managed to regain their spot in the league.

Chelsea legend John Terry believes that Pep Guardiola’s men will take the crown thi season.

Terry told talkSPORT: “I’ve said Man City from the start.

“We [Aston Villa] played against them recently, and they are the kind of team that, no matter how you play, if they are on it, they can beat anyone in the league.

“I think they are the best team, they have the best individuals, and when they are at it they are by far the best team.

“They are showing that with their recent run.

“When you play against them the movement is incredible and you really don’t know what to do.

“It’s one of those games where you come off and can only learn from it really, how well they move and the options they give each other on the pitch. They make it so difficult for the opposition team.

“So they are the ones for me.”

Pep Guardiola impressed by incredible Stones transformation

Pep Guardiola has reserved special praise for John Stones.

After a rocky start to his City career, this season, he has finally found his feet and shown the world what he is capable of.

“What I want for my players, all of them, is to be happy,” said Guardiola ahead of City’s trip to Burnley.

“He struggled to be happy here. Especially for injuries, for some personal problem and for many reasons – lack of minutes because I didn’t see him like he is right now.

“In the past he was not like he is right now, with stability, happiness, commitment and focusing.

“That’s why I give a lot of credit to him because he overcame this situation himself.

“He could have fell down, he could have even gone even more down but it was completely the opposite. He said, ‘No, I am here, I know how good I am’.

“He didn’t need my confidence. He didn’t need the words or the minutes.

“[He said] ‘I know who I am, I know I am a top central defender and I am going to show you, the Premier League, England and the world that I am good’.”

“The player who needs confidence to play is mistaken,” he added.

“They have to have the right mentality. They have to feel they are the best and when that happens you can play.

“I give minutes to everyone, not just one or two players.  Sometimes there are exceptions, but most of the time they play. When this happens, it is your moment. You don’t play for me, you play for yourself.

“The best players I have trained in my life, they don’t play for me, for the media, for the club. They play for themselves to show they are the best and when that happens they don’t need nice words or compliments.

“John overcame the situation himself and that’s why he deserves all my respect and he deserves a big compliment.”

Sergio Aguero is set to miss the crucial tie against Liverpool this weekend.

The 32-year old striker has endured a frustrating campaign this season for Manchester City.

He missed the majority of the games in the new campaign as he was nursing with ankle and thigh injuries.

Earlier last month, he was forced into self-isolation when he came in contact with a Covid positive individual and then contracted the virus himself later in January.

Aguero has resumed full training this week but Guardiola believes he will need some more time to regain full fitness.

“He is still not training on the field,” Guardiola said.

“He started to move a little yesterday but he will need a few weeks to come back.

“He is negative, this is the most important thing. He is healthy again and now he will come back again. As the top scorer it is important for us to have him back.”

Sergio Aguero has entered the final six months of his contract and a contract renewal is on the cards.

Manchester City are currently leading the Premier League with a game in hand.
